“throw away the foreign gods that are among you and yield your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.”

Joshua 24:16-33

Then the people answered, “Far be it from us to forsake the Lord to serve other gods!

And the Lord drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the Lord, because he is our God.

Joshua said to the people, “You are not able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. If you forsake the Lord and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you.”

“Now then,” said Joshua, “throw away the foreign gods that are among you and yield your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.”

“See!” he said to all the people. “This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God.”

After these things, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten. And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash.

Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced everything the Lord had done for Israel.

Joshua's own readiness to commit himself wholly to God remains unwavering at the end of a long life. The eagerness of the people to follow him in renewing the covenant is in itself sufficient tribute to his leadership. His 'we shall serve the Lord' is echoed and re-echoed by the voice of the people: 'It is a high note on which to conclude the book, and verse 31 indicates the strength of Joshua's influence for good. The contrast between this and the book of Judges, which follows, is marked. Verse 32 rounds off the history of the patriarchs as Joseph's bones are buried in the promised land.

Why?

Joshua witness "But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord",

So all of the Israelites be encouraged to witness we will serve the Lord because he is our God.

Joshua shows his caring for his people, but he has his life limit so he said to Israelites to remember God's word and serve the Lord.

Even make stone be a witness among Israelites. But people's hearts is easy to turn to the world and attracted by our selfish mind and turn away from the Lord. We are weak and we need to remind by the Holy Spirit every day.

Only we experienced the goodness of the Lord we will keep and obey the word of the Lord. We have emotion and ambition in our flesh. Reading the word of the Lord in the morning is a good way to remind us of sins.

You are not able to serve the Lord. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. Joshua declared the characters of the Lord. For the Lord is holy, so we have to be holy to serve Him.

God is jealous, it means the Lord is righteousness. No one can stand before the Lord if he is no holy.

----------

jealous God: The Lord and us can not allow have any other gods.

But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord

 Joshua 24:1-15

Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel, and they presented themselves before God.

Joshua said to all the people, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Long ago your ancestors, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshiped other gods. But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac, and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau.

Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and I brought you out.

I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I gave them into your hands. I destroyed them from before you, and you took possession of their land.

So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.

Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.

Joshua assembles the peoples at Shechem to renew the covenant sworn thereafter their first victories in the land. Here, as in Deuteronomy, the covenant pattern follows that of contemporary treaties is followed by a rehearsal of his past favors. The stipulations are made in 14-15, with a warning about the consequences of disobedience.

Why?

Joshua was worried people of Isreal will forsake the Lord and go to worship the gods in Canaanite.

The Lord is faithful to his people, Israelites, their ancestors were chosen by the Lord, now the promise to Abraham comes true, so remember the grace and promised to them.

At last, no matter Israelites what the have chosen, Joshua declared for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.

Expresses his faith and desires.

Joshua's Farewell to the Leaders

 Joshua 23:1-16

You yourselves have seen everything the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake; it was the Lord your God who fought for you.

Be very strong; be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left. Do not associate with these nations that remain among you; do not invoke the names of their gods or swear by them. You must not serve them or bow down to them. But you are to hold fast to the Lord your God, as you have until now.

But if you turn away and ally yourselves with the survivors of these nations that remain among you and if you intermarry with them and associate with them, then you may be sure that the Lord your God will no longer drive out these nations before you. Instead, they will become snares and traps for you, whips on your backs and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land, which the Lord your God has given you.

Now I am about to go the way of all the earth. You know with all your heart and soul that not one of all the good promises the Lord your God gave you has failed. Every promise has been fulfilled; not one has failed.

If you violate the covenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them, the Lord’s anger will burn against you, and you will quickly perish from the good land he has given you.

Some years have elapsed since the division of the land. Joshua has reached the end of a long life and is appointing no single successor. It is therefore vital to ensure that the leaders keep the law and remain faithful to God - the God who keeps his promises. It is God who has given them the land, God who has driven out great and powerful nations: 'You must hold fast to the Lord your God, keeping covenant with him.

Why?

Joshua worries about his people after he passed away they may turn away from the Lord and associate with the survivors of these nations.

Joshua reminds them it is the Lord who fought for them. All they conquered were great nations and strong enemies.

Be strong and be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, without turning aside to the right or to the left is the most important to Israelite and to all Christian today.

Even on the last day, Joshua was caring about the future of the Israelites. So he called the leaders and elders came to him. And he did not choose anyone to be the leader of them.

The Lord did not choose a new leader is to test them how their heart may obey the word of the Lord.

And the Reubenites and the Gadites gave the altar this name: A Witness Between Us—that the Lord is God.

 Joshua 22:21-34

Then Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh replied to the heads of the clans of Israel: The Mighty One, God, the Lord! The Mighty One, God, the Lord! He knows! And let Israel know! If this has been in rebellion or disobedience to the Lord, do not spare us this day. If we have built our own altar to turn away from the Lord and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, or to sacrifice fellowship offerings on it, may the Lord himself call us to account.

No! We did it for fear that some day your descendants might say to ours, ‘What do you have to do with the Lord, the God of Israel? The Lord has made the Jordan a boundary between us and you—you Reubenites and Gadites! You have no share in the Lord.’ So your descendants might cause ours to stop fearing the Lord.

It is to be a witness between us and you and the generations that follow, that we will worship the Lord at his sanctuary with our burnt offerings, sacrifices and fellowship offerings. Then in the future your descendants will not be able to say to ours, ‘You have no share in the Lord“And we said, ‘If they ever say this to us, or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the replica of the Lord’s altar, which our ancestors built, not for burnt offerings and sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.

And Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, said to Reuben, Gad and Manasseh, “Today we know that the Lord is with us, because you have not been unfaithful to the Lord in this matter. Now you have rescued the Israelites from the Lord’s hand.”

And the Reubenites and the Gadites gave the altar this name: A Witness Between Us—that the Lord is God.

The fear that, once they are across the Jordan, Israel may at some future time disown them prompts the building of the altar which caused such misunderstanding. This was neither a sign of idolatry nor a second sanctuary. It was a token of solidarity with the rest of Israel to whom they were bound by faith and worship of the one God.

Why?

The tribes of Gad the Manasseh built this altar is for a witness to their future descendant and the Israelites in West Jordan. To remind them to have the same God, The Lord. And this altar does not offer any burnt offerings and sacrifices.

At this time Israelites on both sides of  Jordan have the same faith in the Lord, and we sware obey the Lord and worship the Lord forever.

Even though a few generations later, both of the Israelites turn away from the Lord. These are the sins of men.

The Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the Jordan

 Joshua 22:1-20

Now that the Lord your God has given them rest as he promised, return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you on the other side of the Jordan. But be very careful to keep the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you: to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

When Joshua sent them home, he blessed them, saying, “Return to your homes with your great wealth—with large herds of livestock, with silver, gold, bronze and iron, and a great quantity of clothing—and divide the plunder from your enemies with your fellow Israelites.”

When they came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the JordanAnd when the Israelites heard that they had built the altar on the border of Canaan at Geliloth near the Jordan on the Israelite side, the whole assembly of Israel gathered at Shiloh to go to war against them.

“The whole assembly of the Lord says: ‘How could you break faith with the God of Israel like this? How could you turn away from the Lord and build yourselves an altar in rebellion against him now? Was not the sin of Peor enough for us? Up to this very day we have not cleansed ourselves from that sin, even though a plague fell on the community of the Lord! And are you now turning away from the Lord?

If the land you possess is defiled, come over to the Lord’s land, where the Lord’s tabernacle stands, and share the land with us. But do not rebel against the Lord or against us by building an altar for yourselves, other than the altar of the Lord our God.

Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh have fulfilled their obligations to help in the conquest. Now they return home, with Joshua's blessing and a share of the spoil.

Why?

At this moment Israelites were faithful to the Lord, and fully obey the word of the Lord, do not allow anyone of Israelite to break faith with the God of Isreal. So when they heard The Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an altar by the Jordan. They were angry and assembled an army to fight their brothers.

Joshua blessed them to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to keep his commands, to hold fast to him and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul. To love the Lord have to with all my heart and with all my soul and all my mind to against the world.

These two and a half tribes obey the obligation to conquer with other tribes, they have done their job and they brought a lot of plunder to go back to their land in the east of Jordan.

Even the Israelites could share their land with them if their land is defiled. It shows the loving heart in Israelite and obeys the word of the Lord.

How?

Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.

Joshua 21:20-45

The rest of the Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted towns from the tribe of Ephraim.

The total number of towns of the Gershonite clans came to thirteen, together with their pasturelands.

The Merarite clans (the rest of the Levites) were given:

The total number of towns allotted to the Merarite clans, who were the rest of the Levites, came to twelve.

The towns of the Levites in the territory held by the Israelites were forty-eight in all, together with their pasturelands. Each of these towns had pasturelands surrounding it; this was true for all these towns.

So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there. The Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the Lord gave all their enemies into their hands. Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; everyone was fulfilled.

Why?
God's word is the truth and fulfilled to his people.

Not one of their enemies withstood them. When they obey the word of the Lord, it is true, when they turn away from the Lord, God's love turns to the warning and gives them the training and testament.

God's promise never failed. Keep the promise of the Lord and follow Jesus Christ will come true.

This provision ensures that the leaders of the nation's faith and worship are dispersed throughout the land

 Joshua 21:1-19

Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribal families of Israel at Shiloh in Canaan and said to them, “The Lord commanded through Moses that you give us towns to live in, with pasturelands for our livestock.” So, as the Lord had commanded, the Israelites gave the Levites the following towns and pasturelands out of their own inheritance:

So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these towns and their pasturelands, as the Lord had commanded through Moses.

The total number of towns for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, came to thirteen, together with their pasturelands.

Total Israelites toke lot by Joshua for Levite have 48 towns. 36 towns in the west of Jordan river(13,10,13 towns from the southern, middle, north area), 12 towns in the east of Jordan.

The Levites receive no tribal inheritance: God is their inheritance. But they are given 48 cities, with pasture, by the other tribes. This provision ensures that the leaders of the nation's faith and worship are dispersed throughout the land.

Why?

Levites haven't land but have 48 towns distributed around every tribe's land. The Lord let them have places to rest with their family and distributed them around the whole Israelites. More important is to remind their faith in the Lord, let Levite be the center of their living.

And the cities of refuge belong to Levite.

How?

God's plan and arrangement always is the best and complete. Trust in the Lord, God is good!

Cities of Refuge

 Joshua 20:1-9

Then the Lord said to Joshua: “Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses, so that anyone who kills a person accidentally and unintentionally may flee there and find protection from the avenger of blood.

They are to stay in that city until they have stood trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest who is serving at that time. Then they may go back to their own home in the town from which they fled.

So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah. East of the Jordan (on the other side from Jericho) they designated Bezer in the wilderness on the plateau in the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead in the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan in the tribe of Manasseh. Any of the Israelites or any foreigner residing among them who killed someone accidentally could flee to these designated cities and not be killed by the avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.

Six cities, three to the east of the Jordan, three to the west - all belonging to the Levites - are designated 'cites of refuge', to protect who caused accidental death from subsequent vengeance and blood feud.

Why?

The cities of Refuge are said through Moses for the Lord said, so Joshua said to Israelites.

If anyone killed a person accidentally, after explained to the elder then he may stay there from the avenger. But it not allow anyone who was intended to kill others. The elders of the refuge city will investigate it.

This is the love design from the Lord to protect his people.

------------

The Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun an inheritance among them, as the Lord had commanded

Joshua 19:40-51

The seventh lot came out for the tribe of Dan according to its clans. 19 towns

When the territory of the Danites was lost to them, they went up and attacked Leshem, took it, put it to the sword and occupied it. They settled in Leshem and named it Dan after their ancestor.

When they had finished dividing the land into its allotted portions, the Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun an inheritance among them, as the Lord had commanded. They gave him the town he asked for—Timnath Serah in the hill country of Ephraim. And he built up the town and settled there.

Dan, assigned land which brought them up against the Philistines and other tough enemies in the south, failed to conquer it and eventually settled in the far north.

The division is completed with the gift of Timnath-serah called Timnath here in Judge 2:9 to Joshua.

Why?

Joshua is completed his mission in his life. He led Israelites to conquer the promised land and keep walking with the Lord, obey his command. Finally, he may settle in his town, Timnath-serah.

Simeonites received their inheritance within the territory of Judah

Joshua 19:1-16

This was the inheritance of the tribe of the Simeonites, according to its clans. The inheritance of the Simeonites was taken from the share of Judah, because Judah’s portion was more than they needed. So the Simeonites received their inheritance within the territory of Judah.

Total Simeon has 13 towns

These towns and their villages were the inheritance of Zebulun, according to its clans. Total Zebulun has 12 towns.

Simen's land, furthest south, overlapped with Judah's, and Simeon became absorbed into the larger tribe.

Why?

All of these are lots by the Lord, so there is the best way to get the inheritance of their land.

How?

No matter how the result is, accept the grace of the Lord, it is good to us.

Joshua then cast lots for seven tribes in Shiloh in the presence of the Lord

 Joshua 18:1-28

But there were still seven Israelite tribes who had not yet received their inheritance.

So Joshua said to the Israelites: “How long will you wait before you begin to take possession of the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has given you? Appoint three men from each tribe. I will send them out to make a survey of the land and to write a description of it, according to the inheritance of each. Then they will return to me. You are to divide the land into seven parts.

So the men left and went through the land. They wrote its description on a scroll, town by town, in seven parts, and returned to Joshua in the camp at Shiloh. Joshua then cast lots for them in Shiloh in the presence of the Lord, and there he distributed the land to the Israelites according to their tribal divisions.

The first lot came up for the tribe of Benjamin according to its clans.

These were the boundaries that marked out the inheritance of the clans of Benjamin on all sides.

There were 12 towns.

The Israelites gather at Shilon, the land is surveyed and Joshua distributes the land among the seven remaining tribes.

Benjamin's land. Jerusalem seems to have been partly on Judah's land partly on Benjamin's.

Why?

Seven tribes have not yet received their inheritance, so Joshua asked them appointed three men each tribe, go out to measure the land God has promised them. Then Joshua may cast lots for them in Shiloh in the presence of the Lord. If it is not cast lots by Joshua there will be trouble to these seven tribes.

Benjamin was the first one to be chosen near Jerico city. But there were many cities are occupied by Canaanites.

How?

Joshua did his role when he is getting old, everyone has his responsibility before the Lord to do their mission. It is to implement the plan and the word of the Lord.

Though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron and though they are strong, you can drive them out

 Joshua 17:1-18

Now Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Makir, the son of Manasseh, had no sons but only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milkah and Tirzah. They went to Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the leaders and said, “The Lord commanded Moses to give us an inheritance among our relatives.” So Joshua gave them an inheritance along with the brothers of their father, according to the Lord’s command.

There were towns belonging to Ephraim lying among the towns of Manasseh, but the boundary of Manasseh was the northern side of the ravine and ended at the Mediterranean Sea.

Yet the Manassites were not able to occupy these towns, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that region. However, when the Israelites grew stronger, they subjected the Canaanites to forced labor but did not drive them out completely.

The people of Joseph replied, “The hill country is not enough for us, and all the Canaanites who live in the plain have chariots fitted with iron, both those in Beth Shan and its settlements and those in the Valley of Jezreel.”

But Joshua said to the tribes of Joseph—to Ephraim and Manasseh— the forested hill country as well. Clear it, and its farthest limits will be yours; though the Canaanites have chariots fitted with iron and though they are strong, you can drive them out.

These tribes were to have extended their territory by clearance and conquest. But the horses and chariots of the Canaanites holding the plains deterred them.

Why?

In the Bible sons and daughter has the same right to get the inheritance among relatives. So it is fair and righteousness.

People lost faith there were many reasons to explain. Ephraim and Manasseh have numerous people. They can conquer the plain area of Canaanite, but they afraid of their iron chariot. We rely on the Lord, not the horse and chariot.

This is the reason that the Israelites fail before the Canaanites for they did not listen to the word of the Lord.

Manasseh and Ephraim, the descendants of Joseph, received their inheritance

Joshua 16:1-10

The allotment for Joseph began at the Jordan, east of the springs of Jericho, and went up from there through the desert into the hill country of Bethel. It went on from Bethel (that is, Luz),[a] crossed over to the territory of the Arkites in Ataroth, descended westward to the territory of the Japhletites as far as the region of Lower Beth Horon and on to Gezer, ending at the Mediterranean Sea.

So Manasseh and Ephraim, the descendants of Joseph, received their inheritance.

They did not dislodge the Canaanites living in Gezer; to this day the Canaanites live among the people of Ephraim but are required to do forced labor.

Why?

Ephraim had not courage and faith to defeat the Cannatire there so later they were influenced by their culture. Then turn away from the Lord.

This is the inheritance of the tribe of Judah, according to its clans

 Joshua 15:20-63

This is the inheritance of the tribe of Judah, according to its clans:

The southernmost towns of the tribe of Judah in the Negev toward the boundary of Edom were:...a total of twenty-nine towns and their villages.

Judah could not dislodge the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the people of Judah.

There were 60 cities in Judah territory.

Why?

Even Judah has huge villages and territory, but they could not dislodge the Jebusites, until a later time. for the city of Jerusalem is on the hill. And they have no faith to conquer this city.

How?

God gives us not always plain field but some hill way, to lead us to trust in him and training our faith in the Lord.

Tuesday, June 15, 2021

These are the boundaries around the people of Judah by their clans.

 Joshua 15:1-19

These are the boundaries around the people of Judah by their clans.

In accordance with the Lord’s command to him, Joshua gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion in Judah—Kiriath Arba, that is, Hebron.  From Hebron Caleb drove out the three Anakites—Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai, the sons of Anak. From there he marched against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher). And Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.” Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.

One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him  to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?” She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.

Judah's cities included those of Caleb - and also Jerusalem, or part of it. But the city was still unconquered much later, at the time of writing.

Why?

The land of Judah seems huge, but there are many cities that were still unconquered.

Othniel is courageous and can fight for Caleb's daughter so he got it. Later Othniel became the Judge of Israel.

Caleb has the important city Jerusalem for his faithful to the Lord.

Caleb not only gets the city but also has a son-in-law.

How?

The Lord blesses those who obey the word of the Lord.

Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the Lord

Joshua 14:1-15

Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel allotted to them. Their inheritances were assigned by lot to the nine and a half tribes, as the Lord had commanded through Moses.

Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him,...So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly. (Deuteronomy 1:36)

Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.

Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance. So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the Lord, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly.

I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then.

Concerning the dividing of the land west of Jordan among the remaining nine and a half tribes. The inheritance of each tribe is decided by lot, by the high priest.

Caleb claims Hebron. Forty-five years after the spy episode Caleb remains a man of unwavering faith. Deuteronomy 10:21. There are still Anankim survivors to deal with. Hebron became Levite property, but Valen retained the surrounding land and villages.

Why?

It is a tough matter to divide the land for an inheritance to nine and half tribes. By lot to the nine and a half tribes to assign their inheritance in the land of Canaan, is the fair and best way. The lot is in hands of the Lord.

After 45 years later Caleb and Joshua are the only two spy followed the Lord wholeheartedly, so he asked the land that the Lord has promised him. And there were Anakites there, he has faith to defeat them, he is still vigorous to go out to battle as he was.

 -------------

------------

How?

How great the Caleb faith, even his promised land Anakites were there, he believed he may get the promised land God gives him through Moses. He followed the Lord wholeheartedly.
