Genesis 6:1-7:5
The sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”
The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
Noah did everything just as God commanded him. The Lord then said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation. Take with you seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and one pair of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, and also seven pairs of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth. Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made.”
The human race, lost in violence and corruption, is bringing destruction upon itself. God reduces the life-span to 120 years. But that alone will not answer. Only an act of judgment will rid the world of sin.
As with creation, we should approach this account as story, expecting picture and symbol and pattern, looking for why it is being told the 'big message.'
In the beginning. God set the bounds of land and water, bringing order out of chaos. Now as a result of human sin, the forces of destruction are let loose. But all is not lost.
Why?
For the sin were full in human beings so God's anger turned to them, God created world to be wiped out. Only Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.
The human race, lost in violence and corruption, is bringing destruction upon itself.
How?
Be aware of God is righteous, the sinner could not be blessed in the eyes of the Lord.
