For I know my transgressions,
Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
Create in me a pure heart, O God,
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
The Hebrew sats this psalm was written by David when the prophet Nathan confronted him over his adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah. V18-19, which seem to belong to the time after Jerusalem fell to the Babylonians, may have been added later.
The psalm itself is deeply moving. It lets us see right into the soul of a man who has loved God yet fallen into grievous sin. He has been made to see himself through God's eyes and admits his guilt. All he can do now - knowing OG's love and mercy- is to ask forgiveness and the chance of a fresh start.
Why?
I confess that I am a sinner, selfish, and grief person. But for God's love, my sins could be erased.
God loves a broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart, God will not despise. I will praise the Lord forever.
Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me, restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit to sustain me. This is my prayer either.
--------------
