Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you

Psalm 73:17-28

Till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.

Surely you place them on slippery ground; you cast them down to ruinHow suddenly are they destroyed, completely swept away by terrors! They are like a dream when one awakes; when you arise, Lord, you will despise them as fantasies.

When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.

Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Those who are far from you will perishyou destroy all who are unfaithful to you. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign Lord my refugeI will tell of all your deeds.
Only as believers turn to God so they learn to see beyond appearances. In reality, God's people have everything that matters. The wicked - for all their wealth - are destined for destruction.
Why?
All like the dream, what we thought is a false dream, we wake up all disappear.
Suffering is good to us to turn back the Lord.
It is easy for whom have I in heaven but you. But it is difficult to earth has nothing I desire besides you.
God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever!
All of these in the world will perish on that day!
How?
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked, Psalm 73

Psalm 73:1-16

Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.

But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; I had nearly lost my foothold. For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

They say, “How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?”

This is what the wicked are like—always free of care, they go on amassing wealth. Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure and have washed my hands in innocenceAll day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments. If I had spoken out like that, I would have betrayed your children. When I tried to understand all this, it troubled me deeply.

This is one of the 'wisdom' psalms: see note on Psalm 1. The issue is God's justice: how is it that those who flout GOd's laws prosper, and trouble falls on those who least deserve it. It is enough to make the good turn cynical, envious and bitter, tempting them to say things better left unsaid.

Why?

From the feature of this society, there exist this phenomenon that the evildoers have prospered life and they look has a good reputation.

But the writer has known all of this, Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.

God has his schedule and his plan to judge all people.

May he endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generations

 Psalm 72:1-20

May he endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generationsMay he be like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth. In his days may the righteous flourish and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.

May all kings bow down to him and all nations serve him.

May his name endure forever; may it continue as long as the sunThen all nations will be blessed through him, and they will call him blessedPraise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds

Praise be to his glorious name forevermay the whole earth be filled with his glory.

This last psalm in Book 2 is certainly a fitting one for Solomon's reign Isreal's golden age of peace, prosperity, and power. But it also looks beyond it to the perfect ideal: an endless reign over the entire world; a rule of God-like justice and righteousness; a time of unequaled fruitfulness.

Why?

God endures as long as the sun, as long as the moon, for the Lord his authority beyond all.

Praise be to his glorious name forever.

Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face

 Deuteronomy 34:1-12

Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah, across from Jericho. There the Lord showed him the whole land—from Gilead to Dan, all of Naphtali, the territory of Ephraim and Manasseh, all the land of Judah as far as the Mediterranean Sea.
Then the Lord said to him, “This is the land I promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob when I said, ‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over into it.”
And Moses the servant of the Lord died there in Moab, as the Lord had said. He buried him in Moab, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, but to this day no one knows where his grave is. Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died, yet his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone. The Israelites grieved for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days, until the time of weeping and mourning was over.
Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, who did all those signs and wonders the Lord sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land. For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
At last, he sees the land he has for 40 years longed to enter. Israel sees Moses no more. But he appears once again in Scripture - on a mountain, talking to the Lord.
The action now passes to Joshua - but the book closes with a simple and moving tribute to the greatest of all Israel's leaders. Remember, remember Moses. There is none like him.
Why?
On mount, Nebo Moses saw the promised land, but God does not allow him to enter it, for he dishonor the Lord once.
There is no one like Moses who sees the Lord face to face.
Even Moses is dead in hundred and twenty years old, but his eyes were not weak nor his strength gone. This is the grace of the Lord with Moses.
Everything and every man has the time of ending, only the Lord who endures forever.
How?
Give honor to the Lord for God is worthy to worship by everyone in the world.

Your strength will equal your days

Deuteronomy 33:1-29

This is the blessing that Moses the man of God pronounced on the Israelites before his death.

Surely it is you who love the people; all the holy ones are in your handAt your feet they all bow down, and from you receive instructionthe law that Moses gave us, the possession of the assembly of Jacob. He was king over Jeshurun when the leaders of the people assembledalong with the tribes of Israel.

Let Reuben live and not die, nor his people be few

Judah: bring him to his people. With his own hands he defends his cause. Oh, be his help against his foes!

LeviBless all his skills, Lordand be pleased with the work of his hands. Strike down those who rise against him, his foes till they rise no more.

Benjamin: Let the beloved of the Lord rest secure in him, for he shields him all day long, and the one the Lord loves rests between his shoulders.

Joseph: May the Lord bless his land with the precious dew from heaven above and with the deep waters that lie below.

Zebulun: Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out, and you, Issachar, in your tents.

Gad: Blessed is he who enlarges Gad’s domain! Gad lives there like a lion, tearing at arm or head.

Dan: Dan is a lion’s cub, springing out of Bashan.

Naphtali: is abounding with the favor of the Lord and is full of his blessing; he will inherit southward to the lake.

Asher: Most blessed of sons is Asher; let him be favored by his brothers, and let him bathe his feet in oil. The bolts of your gates will be iron and bronze, and your strength will equal your days.

Blessed are you, Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LordHe is your shield and helper and your glorious sword. Your enemies will cower before you, and you will tread on their heights.

After all the warnings, this last blessing looks forward to a great and glorious future for Israel. From the historical allusions to the different tribes that had settled, maybe the 11th century, Simeon is not mentioned; his people were later absorbed by Judah. The blessing begins and ends with praise to God, the source of all security and prosperity for his people.

Why?

Blessing to Levite and Joseph is longer than others.

They are not just idle words for you—they are your life

Deuteronomy 32:44-52

When Moses finished reciting all these words to all Israel, he said to them, “Take to heart all the words I have solemnly declared to you this day, so that you may command your children to obey carefully all the words of this law. They are not just idle words for you—they are your life. By them you will live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to possess.

There on the mountain that you have climbed you will die and be gathered to your people, just as your brother Aaron died on Mount Hor and was gathered to his people. This is because both of you broke faith with me in the presence of the Israelites at the waters of Meribah Kadesh in the Desert of Zin and because you did not uphold my holiness among the Israelites. Therefore, you will see the land only from a distance; you will not enter the land I am giving to the people of Israel.

God tells Moses to climb Mt Nebo in order to see the promised land. He cannot enter it because he failed to honor God in the matter of water from the rock at Meribah - an incident that became an example forever of the stubbornness of God's people.

Why?

God's word is not only idle words for us but they are my life. Obey the word of the Lord is the blessing of our life in God's promise.

Moses can see the promised land from distance but can't enter it for Moses did not honor the name of the Lord at the waters of Meribah Kadesh in the Desert of Zin. For to be a servant of the Lord, what I am doing is honor the Holy Name of the Lord!

How?

God's word is my life. May my life could honor the name of the Lord!

Be with sense and discernment in the consequence of this world.

 Deuteronomy 32:20-43

I will hide my face from them,” he said, “and see what their end will be; for they are a perverse generation, children who are unfaithful.

I will heap calamities on them and spend my arrows against them. I will send wasting famine against them, consuming pestilence and deadly plagueI will send against them the fangs of wild beaststhe venom of vipers that glide in the dust. In the street the sword will make them childlessin their homes terror will reign. The young men and young women will perish, the infants and those with gray hair.

They are a nation without sense, there is no discernment in themIf only they were wise and would understand this and discern what their end will be!

How could one man chase a thousand, or two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the Lord had given them up? For their rock is not like our Rock, as even our enemies concede.

By contrast 'the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lan's in Revelation 15 is the song of the faithful who have withstood the forces of evil.

Why?

Leave away the Lord is terror and calamities on the way. Famine, consuming pestilence and deadly plague is overwhelming.

In the street, the sword will make them childless; in their homes, terror will reign.

Why?

For they are a perverse generation, children who are unfaithful. So the calamities, wasting famine, deadly plague come upon them.

Jesus Christ is our rock, stand on Him will be saved with joy. If standing on other rocks is like the sand sinking down.

Don't be a nation without sense and no discernment. May we have sense and understand the consequence of turning to this world.

How?

Be with sense and discernment in the consequence of this world.

He shielded him and cared for him; he guarded him as the apple of his eye

 Deuteronomy 32:10-21

In a desert land he found him, in a barren and howling waste. He shielded him and cared for him he guarded him as the apple of his eyelike an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its youngthat spreads its wings to catch them and carries them aloft. The Lord alone led him; no foreign god was with him.

He made him ride on the heights of the land and fed him with the fruit of the fieldsHe nourished him with honey from the rock, and with oil from the flinty crag, with curds and milk from herd and flock and with fattened lambs and goats.

Jeshurun grew fat and kickedfilled with food, they became heavy and sleek. They abandoned the God who made them and rejected the Rock their SaviorThey made him jealous with their foreign gods and angered him with their detestable idols.

The Lord saw this and rejected them because he was angered by his sons and daughters.

They made me jealous by what is no god and angered me with their worthless idols. I will make them envious by those who are not a people; I will make them angry by a nation that has no understanding.

God instructs Moses to warn his people of their future treacherous disloyalty in song, to be learned and remembered. And as Moses had sung the song of victory at the escape from Egypt so now he sings the last song - a record of disobedience.

Why?

When people living in satisfied and safe easily fall into the abandoned behavior and turn close to the world. Forget the grace of the Lord and lift up ourselves.

Remember the grace of the Lord, and carefully obey the word of the Lord.

-------------------

Moses song

Deuteronomy 32:1-9

Listen, you heavens, and I will speak; hear, you earth, the words of my mouthLet my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dewlike showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants.

I will proclaim the name of the LordOh, praise the greatness of our God! He is the Rock, his works are perfectand all his ways are justA faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.

They are corrupt and not his childrento their shame they are a warped and crooked generation. Is this the way you repay the Lordyou foolish and unwise people? Is he not your Father, your Creator, who made you and formed you?

Remember the days of oldconsider the generations long past. Ask your father and he will tell you, your elders, and they will explain to you.

When the Most High gave the nations their inheritancewhen he divided all mankind, he set up boundaries for the peoples according to the number of the sons of Israel. For the Lord’s portion is his people, Jacob his allotted inheritance.

The literary form behind this song is that of covenant lawsuit: it is an indictment and accusation, with heaven and earth called to witness.

Why?

The word of the Lord is like rain, dew, and showers on the ground.

God is the rock in our life, it is the foundation of our life.

Remember what the Lord has done on me, be humble, and honor his great name.

For the Lord's portion is his people.

How?

Praise the Lord and obey his word and meditate on God's word every day.

When they eat their fill and thrive, they will turn to other gods and worship them, rejecting me and breaking my covenant

Deuteronomy 31:14-23

And the Lord said to Moses: “You are going to rest with your ancestors, and these people will soon prostitute themselves to the foreign gods of the land they are entering. They will forsake me and break the covenant I made with them. And in that day I will become angry with them and forsake them; I will hide my face from them, and they will be destroyed. Many disasters and calamities will come on them, and in that day they will ask, ‘Have not these disasters come on us because our God is not with us?’ And I will certainly hide my face in that day because of all their wickedness in turning to other gods.

Now write down this song and teach it to the Israelites and have them sing it, so that it may be a witness for me against them.

The Lord gave this command to Joshua son of Nun: “Be strong and courageous, for you will bring the Israelites into the land I promised them on oath, and I myself will be with you.”

So Moses wrote down this song that day and taught it to the Israelites.

After Moses finished writing in a book the words of this law from beginning to end, he gave this command to the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord:  “Take this Book of the Law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God. There it will remain as a witness against you.

The law is safely deposited with the Levites, and provision is made for regular public reading. 'Throughout their subsequent history, Israel prospered in so far as they listened to God's word and obeyed it.

Why?

The mission of Moses comes to an end. Joshua will continue leading Israelite to enter the promised land. So the Lord said to Joshua be strong and courageous.

The Lors have predicted that these people who entered the promised land will turn to other gods and forsake the Lord, and the Lord won't listen to them.

Under the proser and joy is easy to fall down in the sins.

---------------

Be strong and courageous, fear the Lord your God and follow carefully all the words of this law

Deuteronomy 31:1-13

Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel: I am now a hundred and twenty years old and I am no longer able to lead you. The Lord has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’

The Lord will deliver them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

The Levitical priests, at the end of every seven years, in the year for canceling debts, during the Festival of Tabernacles, when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God at the place he will choose, you shall read this law before them in their hearing. Assemble the people—men, women and children, and the foreigners residing in your towns—so they can listen and learn to fear the Lord your God and follow carefully all the words of this law.

Joshua is formally appointed and commissioned by God as the people's new leader. Be strong, Don't be discouraged, Moses tells him. God himself will be with you.

Why?

This is the last word Moses said to Israelites, Be strong and courageous, God is going before you. Go to get the promised land, and obey the commands of the Lord.

Most people don't know the word of the Lord, so Moses asked the Levites every seven years when Israelites come to the Lord during the Festival of Tabernacles, read the word of the Lord to all people.

This is important to everyone in any God's people.

How?

Be strong and courageous, Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged! Follow carefully all the words of the Lord!

The offer of life or death

Deuteronomy 30:11-20

Now what I am commanding you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach

The word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it.

See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.

But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed. You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.

This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Moses speaks of the accessibility of God's word.

Why?

Moses declared the consequence of obeying the word of God and turning away and not being obedient to God's word.

It is the choice of Israelites, even the suffering is the way of reminder to come back to the Lord.

For God is love and God hopes us to be blessed whenever turn back to the Lord, the blessing is always for waiting for his people. If resist God's word the consequence will be his own choice.

--------------------------

-------------------------

How?

Let the suffering be our reminder and turn to the Lord, for God is good!

The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants

 Deuteronomy 30:1-10

When you and your children return to the Lord your God and obey him with all your heart and with all your soul according to everything I command you today, then the Lord your God will restore your fortunes and have compassion on you and gather you again from all the nations where he scattered you.

He will bring you to the land that belonged to your ancestors, and you will take possession of it. He will make you more prosperous and numerous than your ancestors. The Lord your God will circumcise your hearts and the hearts of your descendants, so that you may love him with all your heart and with all your soul, and live.

Then the Lord your God will make you most prosperous in all the work of your hands and in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your land. The Lord will again delight in you and make you prosperous, just as he delighted in your ancestors, if you obey the Lord your God and keep his commands and decrees that are written in this Book of the Law and turn to the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

Why?

When obeying the word of the Lord, no matter where we are the Lord will bless us and bring Israelites back to the promised land, and more prosperous than their ancestors.

Jesus came there is no flesh circumcise, and God gives us circumcise in our heart so we may love him with all our heart and with all my soul, and live.

The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us that we may follow all the words of this law

Deuteronomy 29:16-29

When such a person hears the words of this oath and they invoke a blessing on themselves, thinking, “I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way,” they will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry. The Lord will never be willing to forgive them; his wrath and zeal will burn against them. All the curses written in this book will fall on them, and the Lord will blot out their names from under heaven.

Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the Lord our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison.

Your children who follow you in later generations and foreigners who come from distant lands will see the calamities that have fallen on the land and the diseases with which the Lord has afflicted it.

The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.

Something about God and his plans is known only to him. The important thing here is not what is hidden; God's people have all they need to know in the law.

Why?

Don't think I persist in going my own way, it will bring disaster to all tribes and all land he lives. God has warned them a lot.

There is no root among God's people that produce such bitter poison, turn to other gods.

People are curious about some unknown things, the secret things belong to the Lord our God. What we have to know has written in Bible.

How?

Curious about research work and innovation, but trusting in the Lord and obeying his word is our blessing.

I am making this covenant, with its oath, not only with you who are standing here, but also with those who are not here today

Deuteronomy 29:1-15

These are the terms of the covenant the Lord commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb.

Yet the Lord says, “During the forty years that I led you through the wilderness, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet. You ate no bread and drank no wine or other fermented drink. I did this so that you might know that I am the Lord your God.”

Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do.

You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the Lord your God, a covenant the Lord is making with you this day and sealing with an oath, to confirm you this day as his people, that he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  I am making this covenant, with its oath, not only with you who are standing here with us today in the presence of the Lord our God but also with those who are not here today.

Moses' life is fast drawing to a close. He puts his whole heart into this final appeal. He pleads. The voice of God breaks into the narrative, speaking directly to the people. Is there any care like God's care? Were there ever more dependent people?

The covenant is not with this generation alone, but with future generations as yet unborn.

Why?

It is very important to obey the word of the Lord, for this is the way will prosper in our life.

This covenant is not only to that generation but also with future generations and us.

How?

Carefully follow the word of the Lord, honor the Holy Name of the Lord and knowing He is the Lord!
