God's curse on 12 infringements of the law

Deuteronomy 27:11-26

When you have crossed the Jordan, these tribes shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin. And these tribes shall stand on Mount Ebal to pronounce curses: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali.

Cursed is anyone who makes an idol—a thing detestable to the Lord, the work of skilled hands—and sets it up in secret.”

Cursed is anyone who dishonors their father or mother.” Cursed is anyone who moves their neighbor’s boundary stone. Cursed is anyone who leads the blind astray on the road.

Cursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow. 

Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his father’s wife, for he dishonors his father’s bed. Cursed is anyone who has sexual relations with any animal. Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his sister, the daughter of his father or the daughter of his mother. Cursed is anyone who sleeps with his mother-in-law.

Cursed is anyone who kills their neighbor secretly. Cursed is anyone who accepts a bribe to kill an innocent person. 

Cursed is anyone who does not uphold the words of this law by carrying them out.

The ceremony on Mt Ebal. Moses points to the two distant mountains on either side of Shechem in the hills of Samaria. From Gerizim, the blessings are to be pronounced, from Ebal the curses.

With six tribes on either side, the Levites are to pronounce God's curse on 12 infringements of the law, the people adding their 'Amen' - So be it. Four of these five if moving a boundary mark is seen as theft of land relate to the 'Ten Commandments: idolatry, respect for parents, murder. Four concern is forbidden sexual relations. Two are humanitarian. And the final one is a catchall.

Why?

Amen means so be it!

There are twelve curses from the Ten commandments of the Lord.

Blessing and cursing are announced, then people have to choose their way and the consequence.
