Mark 14:32-42
"My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of dead", Jesus said to them, "Stay here and keep watch."
Jesus fall to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. "Abba, Father," he said,"everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will."
Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.
Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! the hour has come.
Why?
Jesus was a little angry that his disciples were sleeping, overcome by the body weakness.
The word translated “watch” means “to have the alertness of a guard at night.”
Jesus warned us that we are too easily distracted by the physical and will be caught unaware if we do not continually discipline ourselves.
Jesus’ disciples today must also watch and pray. We are easily distracted by this world, our fleshly needs and desires, and the schemes of the enemy. When we take our eyes from Jesus and His soon return, our values begin to shift, our attention wanders, and soon we are living like the world and bearing little fruit for God’s kingdom.
“Watch and pray.” We can only remain faithful when we are devoted to prayer. In prayer, we continually allow God to forgive us, cleanse us, teach us, and strengthen us to obey Him. We must pray without ceasing, we are more likely to keep our lives pure and our hearts ready to meet Him.
How?
Watch and pray, for our body is weak, only alert and pray without ceasing. It is the way to bearing fruit for God's kingdom.
