1 Samuel 4:1-11
When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, “Why did the Lord bring defeat on us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the Lord’s covenant from Shiloh, so that he may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies.”
When they learned that the ark of the Lord had come into the camp, the Philistines were afraid.
Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Be men, and fight!”
So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. The ark of God was captured, and Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died.
The Ark or Covenant Box was Israel's most precious possession, kept in the inner room of God's Tent. Inside it was a copy of the Law. Its lid was the mercy seat, a symbol of the presence of God. But now the nation wants to use it as a talisman, the ultimate protection against the enemy. The result is a total disaster: the army defeated, the Ark in Philistine hand.
Why?
Israelite though bring the ark of the Lord's covenant is a fight with the Lord. No, follow God's word and honor God's name is walking with the Lord.
Ark or Covenant is precious for God is with us, but it is not the weapon, it should be our center of worship and a reminder to honor the Lord.
Philistines encouraged by themselves, Israelites were defeated and much more soldiers were died, including Eli's two sons, just as God said through prophet and Samuel.
How?
God is with us, and God is not a symbol in our life but is our master in our life.
