Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner

Exodus 17:8-16

The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.”

When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write this on a scroll as something to be remembered and make sure that Joshua hears it, because I will completely blot out the name of Amalek from under heaven.” Moses built an altar and called it The Lord is my Banner. He said, “Because hands were lifted up against the throne of the Lord, the Lord will be at war against the Amalekites from generation to generation.”

Amalek was first among the nations, but he will come to ruin at last. (Numbers 24:20)

Joshua leads a picked force against the Amalekites, a nomadic tribe descended from Esau. But it is God who gives the victory, as Moses lefts his hands in prayer.

The Amalekites may have been driving the Israelites away from a fertile oasis.

After Saul's 'holy war' (1 Samuel 15) the Amalackites are hardly heard of.

Why?

Moses stood on top of the hill with the staff of God in his hands. Moses raised his hand like the banner of the Lord. So Moses built an altar to memoried this war and the victory is the blessing of the Lord.

Amalek means the world, it was the descendant of Esau. God will against the world, and the Amalekites from generation to generation.

Victory belongs to the Lord. Do we stand with the Lord?

亞瑪利人來打仗，他們看到在利非地看到神蹟，為了爭奪水權而來打仗。

爭戰中讓百姓知道，神的同在。上次以色列人沒有打仗，由神自己出手，這次神要人一起參予。人必須在凡事，特別要在危難中依靠主。同時也提昇人的地位，與神同工。

得勝的關鍵在山上，不是在前線。表面上是人在打仗，其實是神為人打仗。得勝的關鍵在天上，不是在地上。不是我有能力能夠有成果，是神在天上的支持。禱告雖然是得勝的因素，摩西也要有亞倫、戶耳的幫助。我們不是靠禱告，不是禱告的人很厲害而是靠禱告是求神的憐憫。

記得我們能夠有什麼成果，都是神在做，成功的因素是神，靠著那加給我力量的，我什麼都能做。

How?

The Lord is my Banner, with the flag of the Lord means I am obey God's word and under the blessing of the Lord.

Meribah : Because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?

Exodus 17:1-7

They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink. So they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.”

Moses replied, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to the test?”

They said, “Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to make us and our children and livestock die of thirst?” Then Moses cried out to the Lord, “What am I to do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.

The Lord answered Moses, “Go out in front of the people. Take with you some of the elders of Israel and take in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. And he called the place Massah and Meribah because the Israelites quarreled and because they tested the Lord saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?

God shows Moses the place. Sinai limestone is known to retain moisture. This incident, and the names Massah and Meribah, became a byword for rebelliousness. The test is a neutral word in Hebrew, unlike English 'tempt'.

Why?

Once again people of Israel quarreled with Moses and compared their needs with before in Egypt.

The Lord gives the power to Moses with his staff and struck the rock, then the water is flowing out. Once again God is with his people. Moses did not prepare any food and water with these 6 million people out from Egypt, all their needs are provided by the Lord. This is the grace, why they were quarreled with Moses and the Lord, for they were satisfied with the living style in Egypt, even they were slaves.

百姓向摩西發怨言沒有不好，但是總是提到埃及，這是第三次了。第一次在馬拉，第二次在迅的曠野。吃喝的問題。在埃及當奴隸，生命隨時不保，怎麼埃及會比較好，因為對神沒有信心。以前的問題神都解決了，難道現在的問題神不能解決嗎？我們遇到困難抱怨是正常，但是不可去比較過去，會給撒旦留地步。

神站在摩西面前，是服伺的意思。應該摩西服伺神，神屈就自己為了保護摩西。神會帶領我們走過困難。

以色列人因為爭鬧，這次沒有水應該有以前的經驗，將地名改為瑪撒（就是試探的意思），米利巴因以色列人爭鬧，又因他們試探耶和華，爭鬧的意思。神讓我們經歷神蹟，要我們生命成長，學習信心成長的功課。

How?

When we are born in the Holy Spirit, do not compare the good with before, for we have a new identity, we belong to the Lord, son of God. We are free from sins. And the Lord will lead my way forward.

How long will you refuse to keep my commands and my instructions?

Exodus 15:27-16:36

on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt. In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.

So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you will know that it was the Lord who brought you out of Egypt, and in the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?” Moses also said, “You will know that it was the Lord when he gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because he has heard your grumbling against him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.”

The Lord said to Moses, “I have heard the grumbling of the Israelites. Tell them, ‘At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will be filled with bread. Then you will know that I am the Lord your God.

However, some of them paid no attention to Moses; they kept part of it until morning, but it was full of maggots and began to smell. So Moses was angry with them.

Nevertheless, some of the people went out on the seventh day to gather it, but they found none. Then the Lord said to Moses, “How long will you[c] refuse to keep my commands and my instructions? 

So they saved it until morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not stink or get maggots in it. “Eat it today,” Moses said, “because today is a sabbath to the Lord. You will not find any of it on the ground today. Six days you are to gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will not be any.”

So Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar and put an omer of manna in it. Then place it before the Lord to be kept for the generations to come.” As the Lord commanded Moses, Aaron put the manna with the tablets of the covenant law, so that it might be preserved. The Israelites ate manna forty years, until they came to a land that was settled; they ate manna until they reached the border of Canaan.

There had been plenty of fish to eat in Egypt, and fruit and vegetables, and no shortage of water. Here God will provide in a way that teaches his people obedience and daily dependence on him.

Why?
God's grace is enough to us, do take too much even leave it to tomorrow will be perished.

So as our burden and worry don't worry too much, bear the burden today only, don't worry the burden of tomorrow. God will arrange better for us if we obey God's commands and God's instructions.

God is a living God, God is caring for us every day and every moment. Look on the Lord instead of our need.

Israelite don't need to work and have manna every day, this is the grace for them only in history.

在以琳神供應以色列人12泉水及樹供以色列休息。

1-12 以色列人為食物抱怨。真的沒有東西吃，錯在和埃及比較。好像我們現在信主卻和信主前的生活比較，以致發怨言。摩西不算什麼?是謙卑。他們批評其實是在批評神。我們面對別人的批評或是責難，我們不用太在意，不是我們能決定的，神會負責。這次神仍然沒有責備他們。

瑪那本身就是神蹟，吃東西就是神蹟。我們每天有東西吃就是神蹟。多收的人是怕不夠。多撿來的也不能享受。不是多撿一點，就有餘。這個本身就是神蹟，人總要自己想辦法多拿一些，就不相信神。一分耕耘，不一定一分收取。照神的話去做，一分耕耘，十分收穫。神的恩典有時間限制。照著神的時間，神的吩咐去做，日出時去，若懶惰不去就沒有了。人在安息日也出去看，結果沒有瑪那，神因此生氣。這是人不願意聽神的話話，就是沒有東西吃，不相信神的話。人活著不是單靠食物，是靠神的話，按著神的話語一定得到我們尸所需要的，否則什麼也得不到。

Do not grumble but give thanks to the Lord! Obey the word of God could receive the grace and the food from the Lord.

The Lord is my strength and my defense, he has become my salvation.

Exodus 15:1-26

Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord: The Lord is my strength and my defense, he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will exalt him.

In the greatness of your majesty, you threw down those who opposed you. You unleashed your burning anger; it consumed them like stubble.

Who among the gods is like you, Lord? Who is like you—  majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders?

In your unfailing love, you will lead the people you have redeemed. In your strength, you will guide them to your holy dwelling. The nations will hear and tremble; anguish will grip the people of Philistia. The chiefs of Edom will be terrified, the leaders of Moab will be seized with trembling, the people of Canaan will melt away; terror and dread will fall on them. By the power of your arm they will be as still as a stone— until your people pass by, Lord, until the people you bought pass by.

Then Moses led Israel from the Red Sea and they went into the Desert of Shur. For three days they traveled in the desert without finding water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink its water because it was bitter. (That is why the place is called Marah. )So the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What are we to drink?”

Then Moses cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a piece of wood. He threw it into the water, and the water became fit to drink. 

There the Lord issued a ruling and instruction for them and put them to the test. He said, “If you listen carefully to the Lord your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the Lord, who heals you.”

If ever a victory deserves to be recorded for posterity this one does. FirstMoses leads the people in a great paean of triumph; God has saved Israel: he has destroyed their enemy. Then Miriam and all the women take up the refrain, and dance for joy. The song is a fine example of ancient Semitic poetry.

In the desert, the people are soon thirsty and hungry - and mutinous. It is not long before the complaints start.

Why?

This victory shows the great and power and the way of the Lord, No one like our Lord, Who is like you—  majestic in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders? 

But no longer after this joy, Israelites complained to the Lord there is no water in the desert. They forgot what God has done for them. How sad for the people, our eyes are focus on so limit matter.

The Lord is caring for us in everything. Be faithful to the Lord even under the trouble.

How?

Be strong and trust in the Lord for God loves us, God's way always is good to those who follow Him.

Israel learns the truth of Mosses' words: The Lord will fight for you; there is no need for you to do anything

Exodus 14:1-31

And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them. But I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” So the Israelites did this.

When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about them and said, “What have we done? We have let the Israelites go and have lost their services!” So he had his chariot made ready and took his army with him. He took six hundred of the best chariots, along with all the other chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them.

Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on.

The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them, coming between the armies of Egypt and Israel. Throughout the night the cloud brought darkness to the one side and light to the other side; so neither went near the other all night long.

Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.

That day the Lord saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant.

Hemmed in between sea and mountains, with water before them and Pharaoh's forces at their backs, the people of Isreal meet their first big test of faith - and they panic, crying out to God and accusing Moses of betrayal. But God drives back the waters so that they can cross in safety, sending a wall of water rushing down upon Pharaoh's forces, and Israel learns the truth of Mosses' words: "The Lord will fight for you; there is no need for you to do anything.

Why?

Israelite learned that the Lord will fight for you, there is no need for you to do anything.

God is great and when we trust in the Lord do not fear God will fight for us and lead our way forward.

All of these events and miracles are let us know that the great of the Lord. God is the Lord.

Even huge people move slowly, but God's cloud pillar and fire pillar set between Israelite and Egyptian force. so people of Israelite may cross the sea safely.

靠近海邊安營，從人的角度來看是迷路了，是愚蠢的路線，沒有退路的路。人在嘲笑神時沒有想到這是神特別設計的，人自以為聰明時，反而是愚昧的。有時候連基督徒也不明白，神自有主張。

法老的心剛硬所以派追兵。人員以為能力強大可以抵擋神，愈抵擋愈成就神的大事。今天教會要抵擋的不是外在逼迫，反而是內部的腐敗。此事埃及帝國完全被打敗了。

以色列人開始埋怨摩西了。這是人在危險時認為沒有信耶穌比較好，神沒有幫助我，居然以為成為罪的奴僕比較好。這是人的想法。人怎麼知道埃及追兵來，神沒有作為呢?人先怪摩西，其實在責怪神，我們是否也常懷疑神的帶領是錯誤的。不要懼怕，只管站住！只管靜默，不要作聲。看神的作為。這是摩西的回應，也是我們在危難中該有的態度。

神所帶領的路絕對是安全的路，人看是危險的。埃及追兵就差一步，但是被隔開了。紅海分開對以色列人是得救的道路，對埃及人卻是滅亡的道路，同樣一條路卻是不一樣的結果。同樣在神的作為中，有人得救，有人卻滅亡了。

呼召、異象看不見得，但是存在的

沉默是罪該萬死的一群，沉默的世代要為自己負責。虛假的真實---> 真實的虛假

接生婆：順著真理說假話，參孫：順著背逆說真話

東方博士違背承諾，逃走

虛假的真實變成真實的虛假

 

邦有道，危言危行； 邦無道，危行言孫。  

 

邦有道，則仕；邦無道，則可卷而懷之

太2:7,8我也好去拜他。真中有假。

思想：

假的正義

那一天 以色列人住在什亭 … ?  死二萬四千人 ?

以色列人住在什亭，百姓與摩押女子 行起淫亂。因為這女子叫百姓來，  一同給他們的神獻祭，百姓就 吃他們的祭物，跪拜他們的神。

  以色列人與巴力毘珥連合，耶和華的怒氣就向以色列人發作。 25:1-3

都是借刀殺人，都是假藉行公義，奪取拿伯的葡萄園。耶穌有假見證人，彼拉多洗手說不是我！沒有人找假見證人，假見證，人本來就必死亡？

摩押人因以色列民甚多，就大大懼怕，心內憂急 … 1-13

  西撥的兒子巴勒作摩押王。他差遣使者 … 召巴蘭來，說：有一宗民從埃及出來，遮滿地面，與我對居。這民比我強盛，現在    求你來為我咒詛他們，或者我能得勝，攻打他們，趕出此地。

因為我知道，你為誰祝福，誰就得福；你咒詛誰，誰就受咒詛…

神對巴蘭說：你不可同他們去，也不可咒詛那民，  因為那民是蒙福的。

2.我不知道你站在路上阻擋我；你若不喜歡我去，我就轉回。 34

巴勒又差遣使臣，比先前的又多又尊貴。…我必使你得極大的尊榮。  你向我要什麼，我就給你什麼；只求你來為我咒詛這民。

巴蘭回答巴勒的臣僕說：巴勒就是將他滿屋的金銀給我，我行大事小事也不得 越過耶和華─我神的命。現在我請你們今夜在這裡住宿，等我得知耶和華…19

 

神因他去就發了怒；耶和華的使者站在路上敵擋他。… 

  耶和華 叫驢開口，對巴蘭說：我向你行了什麼，你竟打我這三次呢？ ...

當時，耶和華使巴蘭的眼目明亮，他就看見耶和華的使者站在路上，手裡有拔出來的刀，巴蘭便低頭俯伏在地。... 驢若沒有偏過去，我早把你殺了，留他存活。巴蘭對耶和華的使者說：我有罪了… 15-35

3.這巴蘭曾教導巴勒將絆腳石，放在以色列人面前，叫他們…

主知道搭救敬虔的人脫離試探，把不義的人留在刑罰之下，等候審判的日子。 那些隨肉身、縱污穢的情慾、輕慢主治之人的，更是如此 … 他們離棄正路，就走差了，隨從比珥之子巴蘭的路。巴蘭就是那貪愛不義之工價的先知， 他卻為自己的過犯受了責備；那不能說話的驢以人言攔阻先知的狂妄。彼後 2:9-16

By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light

Exodus 13:17-22

When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.

Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.”

By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.

The wildness is steppe county where animals can graze.

was the column of cloud a desert whirlwind? Were cloud and fire supernatural phenomena? Both are symbols associated with God in the Bible.

Why?

It was a pillar of cloud, it is not the pillar of sand. It was a pillar of fire, if is wild wire should be not one but many fires.

It is the supernatural, it was the symbol of the Lord with Israelite.

The Lord brought Israelites away from the battle with Philistine so led them went by the desert road toward the Red Sea.

說明神如何帶領他們。

1.看似神帶領以色列人繞遠路：神為何不幫以色列人打勝仗除去非利士人，因為神同時也眷顧外邦人。以色列人此時還沒有信心面對戰爭。繞道是體貼人的軟弱，培養建立以色列人的信心，經歷神的供應，神的保護。

2.火枉與雲柱的保護：看得見的引導。百姓可以放心跟著摩西走，不致懷疑摩西的帶領，同時也是保護。

3.以色列人不是出遠門，而是回家：這裏也有神的恩典，使我們生活無憂，但是這裏不是我們永遠的家。

God is with us like God was with Israelite when they went out of Egypt.

Consecration of the Firstborn

Exodus 13:1-16

The Lord said to Moses, “Consecrate to me every firstborn male. The first offspring of every womb among the Israelites belongs to me, whether human or animal.

For seven days eat bread made without yeast and on the seventh day hold a festival to the Lord. Eat unleavened bread during those seven days; nothing with yeast in it is to be seen among you, nor shall any yeast be seen anywhere within your borders. On that day tell your son, ‘I do this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips. For the Lord brought you out of Egypt with his mighty hand. You must keep this ordinance at the appointed time year after year.

You are to give over to the Lord the first offspring of every womb. All the firstborn males of your livestock belong to the Lord. Redeem with a lamb every firstborn donkey, but if you do not redeem it, break its neck. Redeem every firstborn among your sons.

The events are to be further commemorated in two ways: 

For a seven-day period after Passover, the people are to eat unleavened bread as a reminder of the hasty departure from Egypt. 

As Israel's freedom has been purchased by the death of the firstborn of Egypt, the nation's firstborn belong in a special sense to God and are to be 'bought back'.

Why?

On that day tell your son, ‘I do this because of what the Lord did for me when I came out of Egypt.’

This is to remember what the Lord did for us when I was a slave in sins, through Jesus's blood I got salvation, so I will go to worship the Lord on Sunday.

The Lord did this miracle thing in history gives us the record to know who is the Lord.

The memory is keeping in their daily life, so as to be a Christian should witness the Holy name of the Lord in our daily life.

不僅不可吃有酵的東西，連看到都不可。無酵代表不易察覺的影響力。原因起初是因為離開埃及要趕快多離開埃及比準備食物更重要，跟隨主比生活中準備好了更重要。這個與分別為聖有關係。要分別就要趕快，要徹底的分別。所以逾越節頭生的歸給神，要分別為聖歸給神。如何具體表現分別為聖，而是在生活中最基本的活動，即吃最重要，從吃開始。不再留戀世界，完全的斷絕，所以不要看到，讓自己不受影響。我們生活是否離開罪惡、離開埃及。

人是健忘的，所以用有形之物來提醒自己。

我們的財產最終的主權屬於誰的?我們的吃喝生活方式都在乎神。財產損失幾乎是我們生活的目標，也是要歸給神。當我們願意把頭生的歸給神，神就要給我們更豐盛。我們的一切都是屬於神，為了神！

During the night Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Up! Leave my people, you and the Israelites! Go, worship the Lord as you have requested. Take your flocks and herds, as you have said, and go. And also bless me. 

The Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country. “For otherwise,” they said, “we will all die!” So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, and carried it on their shoulders in kneading troughs wrapped in clothing. The Israelites did as Moses instructed and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and gold and for clothing. The Lord had made the Egyptians favorably disposed toward the people, and they gave them what they asked for; so they plundered the Egyptians.

The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Sukkoth. There were about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women and children.

Now the length of time the Israelite people lived in Egypt was 430 years. At the end of the 430 years, to the very day, all the Lord’s divisions left Egypt. Because the Lord kept vigil that night to bring them out of Egypt, on this night all the Israelites are to keep vigil to honor the Lord for the generations to come.

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “These are the regulations for the Passover meal: “No foreigner may eat it. Any slave you have bought may eat it after you have circumcised him, but a temporary resident or a hired worker may not eat it. “It must be eaten inside the house; take none of the meat outside the house. Do not break any of the bones. The whole community of Israel must celebrate it.

Just as God foretold, after four centuries in a foreign land Israel is free. The precise length of time may be in a debate: the great, indisputable fact is God's deliverance. The journey to the border begins.

But first, there are further instructions about how the Passover is to be celebrated, who may join in, and where it is to take place. The events are to be further commemorated in two ways:

Why?

All of the events are under the plan of the Lord, Moses, and Aaron and the people of Isreal are follow the instruction of God's word. And when they left they plundered the Egyptians.

The regulations for the Passover meal are the symbols of Jesus Christ on the cross. The Lord has prepared salvation for his people. but only those who follow God can accept this salvation.

430 years later, Israelite left Egypt, the world, and return to the promised land. Before they enter Egypt were 70 people, but they have six hundred thousand men on foot, besides women and children. God makes Israelite to be a big country. It is not a family but a nation that belongs to the Lord.
