Psalm 116
I love the Lord for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy.
The Lord is gracious and righteous; our God is full of compassion. The Lord protects the simple hearted; when I was in great need, he saved me.
Be at rest once more, O my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.
How can I repay the Lord for all his goodness to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord. I will fulfill my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people.
Saved from death in answer to prayer the psalmist comes to make his thank-offering in the Temple. The memory of that terrible time when the grave 'closed in' on him, with fear and danger all around, is vividly present as he pours out his heart in gratitude to God.
Why?
The Lord is full of compassion and he saved me for his mercy, God is living for he heart my voice.
Be at rest, O my soul for the Lord has been good to me, God has given the way to me.
How can I repay to Lord? Praise his holy name and lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord.
Even I am simple hearted man God protected me. Be humble and fear the Lord!
How?
Be at rest once more, O my soul! for God is gracious and righteous.

The one, true, living God
Psalm 115
Our God is in heaven; he does whatever please him.
But their idols are silver and gold made by the hands of men. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.
You who fear him, trust in the Lord - he is their help and shield.
God will bless those who fear the Lord - small and great alike.
May the Lord make you increase, both you and your children.
The one, true, living God
This psalm gives an indication of the way many psalms must have been sung - with a single voice leading and the congregation joining in the response. A powerful contrast is drawn between God - almighty, loving, faithful - and the lifeless, impotent idols of ' the nations'. From the response of trust and confidence in God's blessing the psalm comes full circle back to God and his people.
Why?
Our God is the true God, who does whatever please him. But the idols could not speak, smell and walk. Trust the living God who listen my prayer and loves us.
The Lord is my help and my shield. God is my hope and my fortress.
God makes us increase and prosperity in my home and my work.
How?
Praise the Lord, give thanks to the Lord!

Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord
Psalm 114
When Israel came out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign tongue, Judah became God's sanctuary, Israel his dominion.
The sea looked and fled, the Jordan turned back; the mountains skipped like ram, the hills like lambs.
Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, who turned the rock into a pool, the heard rock into springs of water.
This is the festival which marks the escape from Egypt at the exodus. The people remember how God freed them when they were slaves and made them his own people.
Why?
For the great of the Lord did for Israel, his people, so the mountains skipped like ram.
All the earth tremble before the Lord so people have to fear at the presence of the Lord either.
How?
Remember what God have done for us! Remember God's grace and love to me and fear God's holy name!

He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap
Psalm 113
Let the name of the Lord be praised, both now and forevermore.
From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised.
The Lord is exalted over all the nations, his glory above the heavens.
Who is like the Lord our God, the One who sits enthroned on high, who stoops down to look on the heavens and the earth?
He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes, with the princes of his people.
He settles the childless woman in her home as a happy mother of children.
God is above and beyond his creation, yet he is infinitely aware of human misery. His love reaches to 'the dust', to lift up the poor and needy. Feeling the heartache of the childless wife, God brings her joy -respect instead of disgrace.
Why?
dist and ash heap: The rubbish dump, the place for outcasts. 'misery'
Childlessness was viewed as a sign of God's disfavor - a punishment.
Praise God for his glory above the heaven, for he raise the poor and needy from misery, for he brings joy to the childless wife as a happy mother of children.
How?
Praise the name of the Lord now and forever!

Good will come to those who are generous
Psalm 112
Blessed are those who fear the Lord, who find great delight in his commands.
Their children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in their houses, and their righteousness endures forever.
Good will come to those who are generous and lend freely, who conduct their affairs with justice.
Surely the righteous will never be shaken; they will be remembered forever. They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
A wisdom psalm. For the alphabet form as psalm 111.
Happy are those who obey God and care for others. Their rewards is sure. They can withstand life's knocks, secure and unafraid.
Why?
Obey the word of God is the blessing. Fear the Lord will follow God's command.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom
Psalm 111
Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them.
Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever.
He has caused his wonders to be remembered; the Lord is gracious and compassionate.
He provides food for those who fear him; he remembers his covenant forever.
The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy.
They are established for ever and ever, done in faithfulness and uprightness.
He provided redemption for his people; he ordained his covenant forever—
holy and awesome is his name.
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all who follow his precepts have good understanding. To him belongs eternal praise.
This psalm is identical in from with Psalm 112. Both consist of 22 phrases each beginning with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet.
The psalmist rejoices in God's greatness; his faithfulness and Justice; his integrity and trustworthiness; his provision and his redemption. God is full of gracious and compassionate, so come to the Lord, ask the help to the Lord and give thanks to the Lord!

King and priest for ever
Psalm 110
The Lord says to my lord:“Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”
Your troops will be willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy splendor, your young men will come to you like dew from the morning’s womb.
The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”
The Lord is at your right hand; he will crush kings on the day of his wrath.
This royal psalm speaks in such prophetic terms of the ideal, that it is seen as pointing to God's coming King: the Christ.
Verse 1 is quoted more often than any other Old Testament saying by the New Testament writers, who identify this King - the Messiah - with Jesus.
Why?
Jesus is the Lord, he is not came from priests of Allen but from the order of Melchizedek.
The people of Jesus will come like dew from the morning's womb, his follower are so many after Jesus resurrection from the dead.
Sit at God's right hand means Jesus has great power and authorizes over the world.
How?
Acknowledge that Jesus is the Lord and King.

Be a man of prayer
Psalm 109
In return for my friendship they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer. They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my friendship.
For he never thought of doing a kindness, but hounded(追捕) to death the poor and the needy and the brokenhearted.
But you, O Sovereign Lord, deal well with me for your name's sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me. For I am poor and needy, and my heart is wounded within me.
They may curse, but you will bless; when they attack they will be put to shame, but your servant will rejoice.
With my mouth I will greatly extol the Lord; in the great throng I will praise him. For he stands at the right hand of the needy one to save his life from those who condemn him.
Hebrew title, 'by David'. People the psalmist has loved and treated will have returned evil for good. They have no excuse for the attack which has reduced him to a shadow.
In verses 6-19 his bitterness finds expression in a terrible curse, excused in the psalmist's mind as fitting punishment: 'he loved to curse - may he be cursed! He hated to give blessing - may no one bless him'. It is tit-for-tat(針鋒相對), ' an eye for an eye', as the law allowed.
See 'Self-justification(自我辯解), curing and vengeance in Psalms'. For those who follow the way of Jesus, the longing for revenge must give way to love, even for enemies.
Why?
The cursing from the psalmist, expressing his mind and hate the evil. Like God hates the evil things.
God cares the needy and the brokenhearted one, when enemies hounded them to death, so psalmist cursed his enemies.
Under the Old testament it is allow to 'tit-for-tat' and 'an eye for and eye'. But follow the way of Jesus, the longing for revenge must give way to love, to love out enemies.
Psalmist is a man of prayer. We may express our mind before the Lord, but do the right things before men.
How?
Be a man of prayer no matter what I got!

With God we will gain the victory, for the help of man is worthless
Psalm 108
My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul.
I will praise you, O Lord, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great us your love , higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies.
Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man is worthless. With God we will gain the victory, and he will trample down our enemies.
Hebrew title 'by Divid'. People the psalmist is made up of extracts from 57:7-11 and Psalm 60:5-12.
Why?
Psalmist has decided to sing and make music to praise the Lord.
Praise how great is the love of God and his faithfulness! For David had trampled down his enemies.
Yes, the help of man is worthless, with God we will gain the victory. Obey the word of the Lord and love one another, do the right things.
How?
Trust and work with the Lord, God is my victory and my strength! for the help of man is worthless.
My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing and make music with all my soul.

The wise will call to mind God's 'loveing deeds' and ponder them
Psalm 107
Give thanks to the Lord, for his is good; his love endures forever.
Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. There he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle.
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men.
He who pours contempt on nobles made them wander in a trackless waste. But he lifted the needy out of their affliction and increased their families like flocks.
The upright see and rejoice, but all the wicked shut their mouths. Whoever is wise, let him heed these things and consider the great love of the Lord.
Thanks to the God who saves
In this festival psalm, a single theme (we are beset by troubles of our own choosing or making, but God rescues us from them all) is spelt out(拼出) in four word-pictures: the traveller, the captive, the sick man the sailor.
Circumstances differ for each individual, but all share the same experience: as they cry out to God in their need, he hears and answers. All have equal cause to praise him.
God's unchanging love in dealing with his people. 'The wise' will call to mind God's 'loveing deeds' and ponder them.
Why?
Give thanks to the Lord, for his is good; his love endures forever. God loves us equally then we cry to him in our trouble.
Praise God for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men. No one beyond our God.
Wise men is he who heed these things and ponder the great love of the Lord. God made noble down and lift up the needy out of their affliction.
There is not love comes for the lucky but comes by the grace of the Lord. All of us are under affliction and iniquities.
How?
Be a wise man and always humble myself and give thanks and praise to the Lord!
Give thanks to the Lord, for his is good; his love endures forever.
Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. There he brought the hungry to live, and they founded a city where they could settle.

Save us, O Lord our God
Psalm 106
Blessed are those who act justly, who always do what is right.
Remember me, Lord, when you show favor to your people, come to my aid when you save them, that I may enjoy the prosperity of your chosen ones, that I may share in the joy of your nation and join your inheritance in giving praise.
We have sinned, even as our ancestors did; we have done wrong and acted wickedly.
But he took note of their distress when he heard their cry; for their sake he remembered his covenant and out of his great love he relented.
Save us, Lord our God, and gather us from the nations, that we may give thanks to your holy name and glory in your praise.
The Psalm begins with praise of God's goodness and love. But from verse 6 it becomes a confession of the nation's sin, from Egypt to the psalmist's own day.
Time and again God rescues his people and almost at once they break faith with him. Now they are in exile as the psalmist cries out to God:"Save us. O Lord.'
v48:The doxology added to mark the end of the fourth book of Psalms.
Why?
Blessed are those who act justly, who always do what is right. Sin is people forget the goodness of God and his salvation soon.
Psalmist hope the Lord save them from exile, so they can enjoy the prosperity of the chosen ones, share in the joy of God's nation, join God's inheritance in giving praise.
God is love, his love endure forever, when we cried out to the Lord, God heard us and God remember his covenant with us.
Save us. O Lord.
How?
Act justly and always do what is right is more important than go to church to worship the Lord.

Psalm 105:1-45
Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always.

May my meditation be pleasing to him, as I rejoice in the Lord
Psalm 104:19-35
How many are your works, O Lord! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. (verse 24)
These all look to you to give them their food at the proper time.
May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works
I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as longs as I live.
May my meditation be pleasing to him, as I rejoice in the Lord.
All is summed up in verse 24. The whole of God's creation depends on his unfailing provision, for life itself. To contemplate(沉思) his creation is to catch sight of God's glory and sing his praise.
Why?
Look at this world, how many wonders, let us know that the Lord made it in his wisdom and full of his creatures. Beyond human being can imaging.
How small am I and how little in me! May my meditation be pleasing to God.
How?

God is wonderful creator and sustainer to this world
Psalm 104:1-18
Praise the Lord, O my soul.
He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for man to cultivate - bringing forth food from the earth;
Wine that gladdens the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread that sustains his heart.
The trees of the Lord are well watered, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted.
There the birds make their nests, the stork has its home in the pine trees. The high mountains belong to the wild goats; the crags are a refuge for the coney(rabbit, hyrax).
This wonderfully pictorial psalm to God the Creator and Sustainer of all has parallels in texts from Egypt and Mesopotamia. The psalmist conjures up the marvels, the grandeur(富麗堂皇), the detail of the earth and its creatures, sky and sea, sun and moon - the perfection and completeness of God's work in creation.
Why?
God is wonderful creator and sustainer to this world. Everything has it's way to live and growing.
Every man and animal and mountain and sea should shout to the Lord and praise God's holy name.
God gives us wine, oil and bread and many material let us live more better and numerous. All of these are good to man.
How?
Prais the Lord, God is great and makes wonder to all of us.
Praise the Lord, O my soul.

Praise the Lord, O my soul
Psalm 103
The Love and mercy of God
Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name.
2 Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits—who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. There are seven benefits God gives us.
The Lord is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.
How great God's love: For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.
The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more.
But from everlasting to everlasting the Lord’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children—with those who keep his covenant and remember to obey his precepts.

Surely he will pity his city and free his people.
Psalm 102
For my days vanish like smoke; my bones burn like glowing embers. My heart is blighted and withered like grass; I forget to eat my food. My days are like the evening shadow; I wither away like grass.
But you, O Lord, sit enthroned forever; your renown endures through all generations.
The Lord will rebuild Zion and appear in his glory, He will respond to the prayer of the destitute; he will not despise their plea.
In the course of my life he broke my strength; he cut short my days. So I said: Do not take me away, O my God, in the midst of my days; your years go on through all generations.
Heaven and earth will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.
The psalmist is a young man, wearied by suffering. He pours out all his feelings to God.
v1-11 describe his suffering: ill in body, sick at heart, taunted by enemies. cast off by God. His life is slipping away, but God is not subject to time.
V12-22 may be a hymn the psalmist has included within his prayer. God is Sovereign for ever. Surely he will pity his city and free his people.
V 23-28 revert to the personal. Surely God will answer the psalmist's prayer.
Why?
Pray to the Lord what psalmist is suffering and asked the Lord help him.
Among so much pain and he still believe that the Lord is the sovereign God, he believed the Lord will not forsake him, still listening to his prayer.
Do not take me away in the midst of my days: for he is young.
His day like smoke and the evening shadow means it will soon disappear.

Careful to lead a blameless life
Psalm 100-101
Shout for joy to the Lord, worship the Lord with gladness. Know that the Lord is God, it is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
I will be careful to lead a blameless life.
Men of perverse heart shall be far from me; I will have nothing to do with evil.
Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret, him will I put to silence; whoever has haughty eyes and a proud heart, him will I not endure.
The Lord is God - he made us - the Lord is good. Let all the world sing and be glad. Psalm 100 is one of the best known and most often sung of all the psalms.
Hebrew title, 'by David'. The king pledges himself before God to root out evil from private and public life and to reward integrity.
Why?
God is good and his love endure forever and faithfulness continues through all generation. God is the Lord in all generation and everywhere.
No only love God but also hate the evil and do not allow the slanders and proud men stand before me.

The Lord reigns, he is holy
Psalm 99
The Lord reigns, let the nations tremble he sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake.
Let them praise your great and awesome name - he is holy.
Characters of the Lord: he loves justice, he have established equity, he have done what is just and right.
Moses and Aaron were among his priests, Samuel was among those who called on his name; they called on the Lord and he answered them. Priesthood.
O Lord our God, you answered them. Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his holy mountain, for the Lord our God is holy.
God the King, the Holy One, is on his throne; God who forgives and disciplines his people, from the least to the greatest. Praise and worship him.
Why?
God is far away, yet he is so near to us.
God is far from us, there is bridge between God and us.
In all of his Holy kingship, worship Him, exalt Him, we are awstruck by God.
Ministers are stand for the priesthood as before, among God and us. After Christ came, each Christian who obey the word of God, may pray to Him and God will answer us through his word in Bible and with the Holy Spirit.
How?
