Hosea 1:1-11
The Lord said to Hosea, “Go, marry a promiscuous woman and have children with her, for like an adulterous wife this land is guilty of unfaithfulness to the Lord.” So he married Gomer daughter of Diblaim, and she conceived and bore him a son.
1st son: Call him Jezreel, because I will soon punish the house of Jehu for the massacre at Jezreel, and I will put an end to the kingdom of Israel. In that day I will break Israel’s bow in the Valley of Jezreel.
2nd son: Call her Lo-Ruhamah (which means “not loved”), for I will no longer show love to Israel, that I should at all forgive them. Yet I will show love to Judah; and I will save them—not by bow, sword or battle, or by horses and horsemen, but I, the Lord their God, will save them.
3rd son: Call him Lo-Ammi (which means “not my people”), for you are not my people, and I am not your God.
This is the first and longest of the "Minor' prophets. Chronologically, Amos is a few years earlier.
Hosea was one of Isaiah's contemporaries, a prophet of God in the 8th century BC. He was a northerner and his message was for Israel, the northern kingdom, although he occasionally refers to Judah.
Hosea prophesied for the next 40 years, until just before Samaria fell to Assyria in 722 BC. During that time the country went rapidly downhill. Rejection of God and the wholesale adoption of pagan religious practises brought about a moral and political landslide.
Hosea's great themes are love - God's covenant- relationship with his people judgment and hope.
What Israel's unfaithfulness meant to God - how he continued o love his covenant people and long for their return to him - the prophet learn through bitter personal experience, as the wife he loved betrayed and deserted him. His message comes straight from the heart. This is what makes his book so moving, so universal and so special.
God instructs Hosea to marry Gomer, a woman God knows will prove unfaithful.
This seems to be the meaning of v2, which reads, literally, 'Marry a woman of harlotry淫亂(whoredom). Harlotry in Hosea has a double meaning, describing both illicit sexual relations and religious acts of unfaithfulness.
Why?
Three children are born, and each is given a name which speaks God's message to Israel: 'Jezreel' (standing for bloodshed and punishment), 'Unloved' and 'Not my people'. Thorough the prophet, God is giving his people a last opportunity to repent before judgment breaks on the land. Yet even though they refuse, his loving purpose is not thwarted. Those punished will be blessed. 'Not my people' will become God's own again. 'Unloved' will once more be loved.
This message are come from the Lord, not from men.
How great the patient and obedience Hosea is to implement the mission of the Lord.
How?
God may give us some unreasonable lesson, we have to accept and love out the honor of the Lord and deliver God's mesage to others.
