Daniel 8:1-14
Daniel had a vision, after the one that had already appeared to me. A ram with two horns, one of the horns was longer than the other but grew later. No animal could stand against him.
A goat with a prominent horn came from the west, crossing the whole earth with out touching the ground. He attack the ram furiously, striking the ram and shattering his two horns.
The goat became very great, but at the height of his power his large horn was broken off. and in its pace four prominent horns grew up toward the four winds of heaven. Out of one of them came another horn, which started small but grew in power to the Beautiful Land.
A holy one speaking, "It will take 2300 evenings and mornings; then the sanctuary will be reconsecrated."
At this point the text reverts fro Aramaic to Hebrew. The second vision focuses on the second and third empires. The two horned ram which symbolized Medo-Persia will be superseded by the swift-footed goat - Alexander's Greek Empire Alexander himself is the 'great horn'. The 'four horns' are divided. The little horn, in this chapter, refers to Antiochus IV, who ruled Syria 175-164BC. Verse 9-14 vividly depict the atrocities(暴行) of his reign, which resulted in the Jewish Maccabean revolt 1 Maccabees 1-6 recounts this period of Jewish history.
2300 days: Antiochus(安提阿古) first meddled(插手) in Jewish affairs in 171; he died in 164
Antiochus desecrated the Temple by installing apgan altar for sacrifices.
