My way and my portion
Jeremiah 13:1-27
These wicked people, who refuse to listen to my words, who follow the stubbornness of their hearts and go after other gods to serve and worship them, will be like this belt—completely useless!
This is your lot, the portion I have decreed for you,”declares the Lord, because you have forgotten me and trusted in false gods.
God makes use of many teaching methods to set his message across. The prophets sometimes act out their message. The garment Keremiah conceals so that it will be spoiled is variously translated loin-cloth, belt and shorts. Action often speak louder than words, and stick in the mind.
Here Jeremiah announces that Judah and Jerusalem will be thoroughly ruined, like his garment. He was full of grief at announcing God's vengeance, though he had earlier cried out for it: 'If you will no listen... I will carry bitterly.'
Why?
Refuse to listen to God's words is useless in eyes of the Lord. So it is completely useless, there are not mercy and grace on then.
Someone says it is my lot, my portion, but God is my way, my portion.
How?
Listen to the word of God and stands on the cross of world culture to reflect the grace of God.

Lips and heart
Jeremiah 12:1-17
Jeremiah's complaint:
You are always on their lips but far from their hearts. How long will the land lie parched and the grass in every field be withered?
God's answer:
If you have raced with men on foot and the they have worm you out. how can you compete with horses?
They will sow wheat but reap thorns; they will wear themselves out but gain nothing/.So bear the shame of your harvest because of the Lord's fierce anger.
But after I uproot them, I will again have compassion and will bring each of them back to his own inheritance and his own country.
But if any nation does not listen, I will completely uproot and destroy it, declares the Lord.
The discovery leads Jeremiah to question God about the way evil people get on in the world. He is neither the first, nor the last, to puzzle over this.
In God tells him there is worse to come! Nonetheless, he will punish, and afterward restore.
Why?
People always know God on their lips, but far from heart. Show out faithfulness on our behavior.
How?
Practice our faith in our daily life. Asked the wisdom from the Lord!

God's covenant-agreement with his people
Jeremiah 11:1-23
You Judah, have as many gods as you have towns; and the altars you have set up to burn incense to that shameful god Baal are as many as the streets of Jerusalem.
I had been like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter; I did not realize that they had plotted against me, saying, Let us destroy the tree and its fruit; let us cut him off from the land of the living, that his name be remembered no more.
The terms of God's covenant-agreement with his people, made at Sinai after the exodus, are still in force. By persistent disobedience to God's law, and by idol-worship, Judah has broken that agreement and come under the curse.
Jeremiah must go and tell the people. Nor does God want him to pray on their behalf; it sounds as if God has had many such pleas from the prophet!
This chapter seems to belong to the period of reaction following Josiah's reforms.
Jeremiah's message arouse such intense anger that the people of Anathoth, his home town, were prepared to kill him if he didn't stop. It is God, keeping his promise to protect the prophet, who alerts Jeremiah to the danger.
Why?
Every town has one or more gods in Judah. Same as in Taiwan now.
People of Jeremiah's home town wanted to kill Jeremiah for he talk the word of God, his message is warning message, but people don't like to listen.
God will protect his servants and sometimes God's has his own plan. If devote our life should be worthy before the Lord.
How?
Trust and obey God's word, sometime looks unreasonable, but obey and follow it would be the best way.

The living God and wooden idols
Jeremiah 10:1-25
No one is like you, Lord; you are great, and your name is mighty in power.
What the craftsman and goldsmith have made is them dressed in blue and purple - all made by skilled workers. But the Lord is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King.
Everyone is senseless and without knowledge; every goldsmith is shamed by his idols.
They are worthless, the objects of mockery; when their judgment comes, they will perish. He who is the Portion of Jacob is not like these, for he is the Maker of all things, the Lord Almighty is his name.
Lord, I know that people's lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps. Discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure - not in your anger, or you will reduce me to nothing.
Idols made by human hands, no matter how elaborate they may be, are lifeless, powerless, motionless, speechless. Not so the God of Israel. It was he, not they, who created earth and sky.
Now this same God is poised to destroy them. Jeremiah can hear the enemy coming, as he prays.
Why?
God's name is Almighty, God is great and wonder, he created everything in his wisdom.
God is the living God, it is not like idols can not speak, hear or speak.
Discipline me, Lord, but only in due measure: God will discipline me for my good and life growing. Training me to learn the knowledge. Don't be a senseless man.
How?
For my Lord is the living God, so fear the Lord and obey his command is the way in my life, knowing his great name is my blessing.

Boast about they have the understanding to know the Lord
Jeremiah 9:1-26
They do not acknowledge me declares the Lord.
Friend deceives friend, and no one speaks the truth. They have taught their tongues to lie; they weary themselves with sinning. In their deceit they refuse to acknowledge me, declares the Lord.
Who is wise enough to understand this? Who has been instructed by the Lord and can explain it? Why has the land been ruined and laid waste like a desert that no one can cross?
It is because they have forsaken my law, which I set before them; they have not obeyed me or followed my law.
Let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight, declares the Lord.
I will punish all who are circumcise only in the flesh.
It is not always clear here whether the speaker is Jeremiah, God or the people. Jeremiah shares God's own deep grief at his people's sin and its tragic consequences. Society is sick; sick as a direct result of the nation abandoning God and his laws and going their own way. So inevitable has judgment become that the professional mourners can already be called in.
Why?
Deceit is sin before the Lord and detestable thing among people. No one like lier, people like the truth, but people are always do not know what is the truth for there are many sins among society.
Circumcise is a ceremony in the flesh, God like us be circumcised in the heart, let the whole man whole heart belong to the Lord.
Who is wise man? Who can boast? What can I boast? Only those who understand the Lord is Almight God, Only boast for the God's great mercy and grace on me. I can boast nothing excep the Lord.
How?
Be humble and boast the grace and righteousness of the Lord.

Condemned by God
Jeremiah 8:1-21
But my people do not know the requirements of the Lord.
How can you say,"We are wise, for we have the law of the Lord," when actually the lying pen of the scribes has handled it falsely.
The wise will be put to shame; they will be dismayed and trapped.
Are they ashamed of their detestable conduct? No, they have no shame at all.
The harvest is past, the summer has ended, and we are not saved. Since my people are crushed, I am crashed; I mourn, and horror grips me.
The people refuse to repent. They are aided and abetted(教唆) by religious smooth-talkers: the scribes, the 'wise' to whom they turned for advice, the prophets and the priests. All alike are motivated by self-interest.
Why?
God felt sorrow for his people do not repent and do not know the requirement of the Lord.
What is wise? It is not the knowledge , not the laws or the church, but the heart fear the Lord and obey God's word.
Wise man will be put to shame for their proud.
How evil a man? How harder a man, even suffered so many trouble, their heart do not turn to the Lord.
How?
Be aware of the warning of the Lord, repent and turn to the Lord.

Personal attitude is more important and speak the law
Jeremiah 7:21-34
God did not ask just give them commands about burnt offerings and sacrifices, but gave them this command: obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you. But they did not listen or pay attention.
Therefore say to them, 'This is the nation that has not obeyed the Lord its God or responded to correction. Truth has perished; it has vanished from their lips.
Security and well-being rest on obedience to God.
Why?
God do not like burnt offerings and sacrifices, instead God like his people obey him, walk in obedience to all God command. So the truth and justice are lost in people of Judah. The desolation was came to them.
They must cut off their hair : either in mourning, or as a sign that they are no longer pledged to God.
How?
In stead of going to the church, God like us fear God and doing good things. Personal attitude is more important and speak the law.

Deal with each other justly
Jeremiah 7:1-20
If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly, if you do not oppress the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm, then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave your ancestors for ever and ever. But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless.
In this house, which bears my Name, and say, “We are safe”—safe to do all these detestable things? Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of robbers to you? But I have been watching! declares the Lord.
The children gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead the dough and make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven. They pour out drink offerings to other gods to arouse my anger.
The people had a superstitious faith in the Temple. They thought God would always protect Jerusalem as he has done in 701 because his Temple was there.
They were wrong. God sends Jeremiah to stand at the Temple gate and tell them that God knows the difference between religious ritual and real religion. He sees all that goes on. Jerusalem is no more sacrosanct than Shiloh, the sanctuary the Philistines destroyed. Even now, if they will stop what they are doing, change their ways, God will let them go on living in the land he gave them.
Queen of heaven: The fertility goddess Ashtoreth.
Why?
Temple, church is not most important, it is the heart of the followers trust in the Lord or not. Does their actions and their ways are deal with each other justly.
In Taiwan, there are many people worship to the Queen of Heaven, same as in Judah 2000 years ago.
How?
Turn our heart and eyes on the Lord, deal with each other justly. Fear the Lord for God is righteous and with love.

Ask where the good way is
Jeremiah 6:16-30
Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.
I appointed watchmen over you and said, ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’. But you said, ‘We will not listen.’
Hear, you earth: I am bringing disaster on this people, the fruit of their schemes, because they have not listened to my words and have rejected my law.
I have made you a tester of metals and my people the ore, that you may observe and test their ways.
They are all hardened rebels, going about to slander. They are bronze and iron; they all act corruptly.
They are called rejected silver, because the Lord has rejected them.
Why?
God has made Jeremiah and other prophets as watchman and warned them, but they did not repent and did not listen so the disaster came to them.
Because they have not listened to God's word and have rejected God's law so God rejected them.
Rejected silver is useless to describe God does not care them, their heart are dead like iron and bronze.
Where is my heart and eyes focus on? Is the way of the Lord or the way of this world?
We may ask the Lord where the good way is?
How?
Dear Lord, show me the way and please bless my heart pure and my eyes focus on you. You are my way and my life.
Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.

Jerusalem under siege
Jeremiah 6:1-15
Raise the signal over Beth Hakkerem! Arise, let us attack at noon! arise, let us attack at night and destroy her fortresses!
This city must be punished; it is filled with oppression.
Take warning, Jerusalem, or I will turn away from you and make your land desolate so no one can live in it.
To whom can I speak and give warning? who will listen to me? Their ears are closed so they cannot hear. The word of the Lord is offensives to them; they find no pleasure in it.
They have no shame at all; they do not even know how to blush(臉紅). So they will fall among the fallen; they will be brought down when I punish them, says the Lord.
All God's warnings have fallen on deaf ears. His call to walk 'the good way' has met with flat refusal. So God has rejected his people and turned them over to the invading armies. Even Jerusalem will be besieged.
Why?
Nation's fall because of their wicked things and their town filled with oppression.
No one listen to the word of the Lord, they have no shame at all, they do not even know how to blush, so the angry of the Lord poured on them.
God's word is truth and will come on his time.
How?
Be careful to listen the word of the Lord and do the right thing on the way of God.

God assures us of the regular weeks of harvest
Jeremiah 5:20-31
You foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear.
These people have stubborn and rebellious hearts; they have turned aside and gone away.
Your wrongdoings have kept these away; your sins have deprived you of good.
Should I not punish them for this? declares the Lord.
God who gives autumn and spring rains in season who assures us of the regular weeks of harvest.
Why?
People of Israel and Judah did not fear the Lord and turn away from the Lord,, wrongdoings and sins have turned aside and gone away from the bless of the Lord.
All of the season and the harvest are under blessing of the Lord.
Don't be a foolish and senseless man, careful watching and listening.
How?
Fear the Lord and worship his holy name.
You foolish and senseless people, who have eyes but do not see, who have ears but do not hear.

Nation corruption
Jeremiah 5:1-19
If you cab find but one person who deals honestly and seeks the truth, I will forgive this city.
They made their faces harder than stone and refused to repent.
Why should I forgive you? Your children have forsaken me and sworn by gods that are not gods. I supplied all their needs, yet they committed adultery and thronged to the houses of prostitutes.
The prophets are but wind and the word is not in them; so let what they say be down to them.
Because the people has spoken these words, I will make my words in your mouth a fire and these people the wood it consumes.
God searches in vain for a vestige of truth and justice among his people. The nation is steeped in idolatry: happy with a rotten society: untroubled by conscience. God and his prophets alike are disregarded. It is false prophecy the people want to hear. God has no option but to punish.
Why?
There was not one in Israel and Judah seek the truth and honestly in his heart so the Lord has not option to punish these nations.
Poor and prophets and officials are lie and refused to repent, their face are harder than stone, they do not know what is shame. So they will be consumed like wood.
God's word become fire in their mouth for they deceived others.
When a nation and his people away from the Lord and his word will be ruined.
How?
Repent to the Lord, God is the sovereign Lord, fear the Lord is the wisdom.

They know not how to do good
Jeremiah 4:19-31
My people are fools; they do not know me. They are senseless children; they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil; they know not how to do good.
My people are fools; they do not know me. They are senseless children; they have no understanding. They are skilled in doing evil; they know not how to do good.
This is what the Lord says:“The whole land will be ruined, though I will not destroy it completely.
Therefore the earth will mourn and the heavens above grow dark, because I have spoken and will not relent, I have decided and will not turn back.
Jeremiah is given a preview of the nation's collapse before the Babylonian army which fills him with unspeakable horror.
Why?
People of Israel are fools for they do not know God, they rely on their talent and man.
They will be destroyed by their evil, they know not how to do good means their heart are filled with evil mind.
How?
Dear Lord, please give me a pure heart and love you, give me the understanding to know what is your way for me.

Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, circumcise your hearts,
Jeremiah 4:1-18
Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, circumcise your hearts, you people of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, or my wrath will flare up and burn like fire.
Jeremiah said to the Lord: Sovereign Lord! How completely you have deceived this people and Jerusalem by saying,'You will have peace,' when the sword is at our throats!"
How long will you harbor wicked thoughts?
Tell this to the nations, proclaim concerning Jerusalem: 'A besieging army is coming from a distant land, raising a war cry aginst the cities of Judah. They surround her like men guarding a field, because she has rebelled against me, declares the Lord.
Even now God will save his people if they really repent. He will bring them back from exile a united nation whose worship is a living reality, not a mere ritual.
All Jewish boy babies were circumcised when they were eight days old, as a sign that they had entered into covenant relationship with God.
Destruction and devastation are about to fall on Judah.
Why?
Circumcise is a ceremony but more important is curcumcise heart, which bring our the action of repent and faith.
You will fave peace is sweet word people like to hear it, but it deceived man when they turn away from the Lord, there is not peace among them.
God is waiting for Judah and Jerusalem turn back to Him, but they are still living among wicked behavior like bort stay in wicked harbor.
How?
Circumcise yourselves to the Lord, circumcise your hearts, do not worship the Lord by mount but with all my heart!

Only acknowledge your guilt
Jeremiah 3:1-25
In spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return to me with all her heart, but only in pretense,” declares the Lord. The Lord said to me, “Faithless Israel is more righteous than unfaithful Judah.
Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will frown on you no longer, or I am faithful,’ declares the Lord, ‘I will not be angry forever. Only acknowledge your guilt—you have rebelled against the Lord your God, you have scattered your favors to foreign gods under every spreading tree, and have not obeyed me,’declares the Lord.
In those days the people of Judah will join the people of Israel, and together they will come from a northern land to the land I gave your ancestors as an inheritance.
I thought you would call me ‘Father’ and not turn away from following me.
We have sinned against the Lord our God, both we and our ancestors; from our youth till this day we have not obeyed the Lord our God.
Why?
Jeremiah has showed the future image of Israel and Judah will come back together from north to worship the Lord and call God 'Father".
Pretense is more worse then faithless. Unfaithful Judah did not return to God with all her heart.
Acknowledge our guilt is the only way back to the Lord and get the mercy of the Lord. God will not be angry forever!
How?
Commit our sins and return to the Lord, for God is our help and savior.

You of this generation, consider the word of the Lord
Jeremiah 2:20-37
Long ago you broke off your yoke and tore off your bonds; you said, "I will not serve you!'
I had planted you like a choice vine of sound and reliable stock. How then did you turn against me into a corrupt, wild vine?
As a thief is disgraced when he is caught, so the house of Israel is disgraced.
In vain I punished your people; they did not respond to correction.
You of this generation, consider the word of the Lord.
You say,'I am innocent; he is not angry with me.' But I will pass judgment on you because you say,' I have not sinned.'
Why?
Long ago God had planed to save us and protect us. Do not forget God's grace on us.
I am a choice vine connect to the Jesus Christ, if leave the root I can do nothing. Become wild vine.
God's punishment is sever so let turn to the Lord for his grace and love endure forever.
This generation must consider the word of the Lord. God's word is my way.
When we have way we can get the victory and peace and prosper.
All of us have sinned so we need Jesus Christ.
How?
Consider and mediate God's word everyday.

God is the spring of living water
Jeremiah 2:1-19
God remember the devotion of Israel youth . But now they did not ask "Where is the Lord, who brought us up out of Egypt."
The priest did not ask, 'Where is the Lord?' The leaders revelled against God. The prophets prophesied by Baal, following worthless idols.
Be appalled(懾)at this, you heavens, and shudder (不寒而栗)with great horror," declares the Lord.
My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
Chapter 2-24 are all prophecies against Judah and Jerusalem. and Jerusalem. Jeremiah begins with a tender portrayal of 'first love': the time when the nation was faithful to God, when God led them towards their new land, protecting them from harm. But in Canaan Israel betrayed against them. The heathen(異教徒) nations are at least loyal to their idols. Not so the people of the living God. Their offence is set before them in a series of vivid pictures.
They prefer their own polluted water to God's fresh spring. They would sooner turn to Egypt and Assyria for help than to God.
Why?
People are easy forget the living God have done to them, and when they fall, they try to find the help by themselves.
God is full of mercy, God remember the royalty of Israel when they were young, so God sent Jeremiah to warning his children turn back before his angry pour down on them.
God gives us living water, alway come to get the living water to rest and gain strength when we are tired and weary. Search help from the Lord instead from man.
How?
Remember God is my living water, my savior and my shield.

Before you were born I set you apart; Jeremiah
Jeremiah 1:1-19
The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah, saying"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."
Do nto say, 'I am too young."You must go to everyone I send you and say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them, for I am with your and will rescue you", declares the Lord.
Jeremiah see the branch of an almond tree: my word is fulfilled.
A pot that is boiling, it is titling toward us from the north: From the north disaster will be poured out on all who live in the land.
All nations and people of the land will fight against Jeremiah but will not overcome him, for God is with him and will rescue him.
The date is 627BC. Jeremiah is a young man, probably is his early twenties, and as reluctant to become God's spoken man as Moses before him.
But about one thing he has no doubt. His message was a word from God himself. "The word of the Lord came to me' runs as a refrain right through the book, from first to last. In this lies his certainty, and his compulsion.
Straightway Jeremiah is given vision. God shows and explains to the prophet what he is going to do; what Jeremiah must tell the people. They will not want to hear. They will be against Jeremiah from the outset. But God will protect him. The pattern of Jeremiah's whole life is set out in this initial encounter with God.
Almond : The two words sound alike in the Hebrew: 'shaqed/shoqed'
Why?
Jeremiah was appointed as priest of the Lord.
God's word alway people don't like it, but it is good to us and warning us not go astray.
How?
Do not be arfaid when I say God's word with love and stand firm on the truth.

Sin of tongue - lies
Psalm 120
Call on the Lord in my distress, and he answers me. Save me, Lord from lying lips and from deceitful tongues.
What will he do to you, and what more besides, you deceitful tongue?

rise before dawn and cry for help
Psalm 119:145-160
I rise before dawn and cry for help; I have put my hope in your word.
My eyes stay open through the watches of the night(夜更未換將眼睜開), that I may meditate on your promises.
Preserve my life according to your laws, according to your promise, according to your love.

Psalm 119:113-128

In your unfailing love preserve my life
Psalm 119:81-96
Though I am like a wineskin in the smoke, I do not forget your decrees. How long must your servant wait? When will you punish my persecutors?
In your unfailing love preserve my life, that I may obey the statutes of your mouth.
Your word, Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues through all generations; Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you.
To all perfection I see a limit, but your commands are boundless.
The will of God expressed in his teaching governs the psalmist's life-style and his conduct, gives him hope and peace, leads him into life and liberation. His confidence it is unboundary.
Why?

Blessed are they whose ways are blameless
Psalm 119:1-16
Blessed are they whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart.
How can a young man keep his way pure?
By living according to your word. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you. Meditate in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. And meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.
This is the longest psalm of all - and the most form; and elaborate in concept. There are 22 eight-verse sections. Each section begins with a successive letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and each verse within the section begins with the same letter.
Within this stylized pattern the psalmist makes a series of individual, though not isolated or disconnected, statements about the 'law' and the individual - interspersed with frequent prayers. He uses ten different words to describe it: God's la, his testimonies, precepts, statutes, commandments, ordinances, word, way, promises and judgments. And one or other of these descriptions occurs in all but a very few verses. He seems to have taken the same delight in the discipline set by this complex poetic form, as he did in the study of the law itself. True freedom is found through constraint, in both cases.
Why?
Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, like Daniel, not one can found his fault in his way.
Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek God with all their heart.
Mediate God's way and his word and his way is the best way to keep our way pure.
How?
Living according to God's word and meditate God's word and what God has done to me!

It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man
Psalm 117-118
The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me. He is my helper. I will look in triumph on my enemies.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.
The Lord is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation.
I will give you thanks , for you answered me; you have become my salvation.
The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his love endures forever.
117:The psalmist calls all nations to praise the Lord. I his love and constant care for Israel he shows his purpose for every nation.
118:The hymn was sung in processing by king, priests and people. As they approach the Temple, the king recalls the victory won with God's help.
The procession, carrying branches, moves from the gateway to the altar.
Why?
The Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes: The despise nation of Israel has become the great power. By Jesus' day Israel, in turn, had forfeited(沒收) their privilege position.
God is my helper, he is with me, so I will not be afraid.
God is my strength, my song and my salvation. God gives me faith so I have strength, I will praise to the Lord for he gives me triumph, God saves me in every situation.
How?
Give thanks to the Lord, trust in the Lord insted of man. God is my strength, my song and my salvation.
