Jeremiah 7:1-20
If you really change your ways and your actions and deal with each other justly, if you do not oppress the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow and do not shed innocent blood in this place, and if you do not follow other gods to your own harm, then I will let you live in this place, in the land I gave your ancestors for ever and ever. But look, you are trusting in deceptive words that are worthless.
In this house, which bears my Name, and say, “We are safe”—safe to do all these detestable things? Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of robbers to you? But I have been watching! declares the Lord.
The children gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead the dough and make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven. They pour out drink offerings to other gods to arouse my anger.
The people had a superstitious faith in the Temple. They thought God would always protect Jerusalem as he has done in 701 because his Temple was there.
They were wrong. God sends Jeremiah to stand at the Temple gate and tell them that God knows the difference between religious ritual and real religion. He sees all that goes on. Jerusalem is no more sacrosanct than Shiloh, the sanctuary the Philistines destroyed. Even now, if they will stop what they are doing, change their ways, God will let them go on living in the land he gave them.
Queen of heaven: The fertility goddess Ashtoreth.
Why?
Temple, church is not most important, it is the heart of the followers trust in the Lord or not. Does their actions and their ways are deal with each other justly.
In Taiwan, there are many people worship to the Queen of Heaven, same as in Judah 2000 years ago.
How?
Turn our heart and eyes on the Lord, deal with each other justly. Fear the Lord for God is righteous and with love.
