Jeremiah 31:1-22
Hear the word of the Lord, you nations; proclaim it in distant coast lands: He who scattered Israel will gather them and will watch over his flock like a shepherd.
For the Lord will deliver Jacob and redeem them from the hand of those stronger than they.
Retrain your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for your work will be rewarded, declares the Lord.
How long will you wander, unfaithful Daughter Israel? The Lord will create a new thing on earth - the woman will return to the man.
The words of Jeremiah here, like those of Isaiah, have a short-term and long-term future significance. He is talking of the actual return from exile, yet there is more to be fulfilled.
The writers of the New Testament see in Jesus Christ that full realization of Jeremiah's prophecy. It is the Holy Spirit's work, through Christ, to 'write God's laws' on the hearts' of all believers.
Why?
The Lord will have mercy to his people in the near and future.
It stimulates us that we should obey God's word, for his love endure forever.
For our work will be rewarded, the Lord deliver Jacob and redeem us, who is Jesus Christ have done for us.
How?
Hear the word of the Lord! Proclaim his holy name everyday in every place.
