Jeremiah 35:1-19
During the reign of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah:
Go and tell the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem, ‘Will you not learn a lesson and obey my words?’ declares the Lord. Jehonadab son of Rekab ordered his descendants not to drink wine and this command has been kept. To this day they do not drink wine, because they obey their forefather’s command. But I have spoken to you again and again, yet you have not obeyed me.
Then Jeremiah said to the family of the Rekabites, “This is what the LordAlmighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘You have obeyed the command of your forefather Jehonadab and have followed all his instructions and have done everything he ordered.’ Therefore this is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: ‘Jehonadab son of Rekab will never fail to have a descendant to serve me.’”
Chapter 35, 36 take us back 10 years to the earlier siege of Jerusalem in the reign of King Jehoiakim. The Rechabites, pledged to abstain from wine and to a nomadic lifestyle, were descendants of Jehonadab, who took God's part against the Baal-worshipers in 2 Kings 10:15-23.
Fear of the invading army brings them to the city, where their obedience to a pledge made 200 years before puts the people of God to shame.
Why?
Compare between the descendent of Israel and Jehonadab, they obey their forefather's word so the Lord blesses them. But Israelite did not obey God's command, the sever disaster is bring to them.
How?
God's word is my way and my hope, trust in Him instead of my strength. Take easy for the Lord is my shepher.
