2 Samuel 9:1-13
David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?”
“Don’t be afraid,” David said to him, “for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will always eat at my table.”
Mephibosheth bowed down and said, “What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me?
Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul’s steward, and said to him, “I have given your master’s grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family. You and your sons and your servants are to farm the land for him and bring in the crops, so that your master’s grandson may be provided for. And Mephibosheth, grandson of your master, will always eat at my table.”
Why?
David is faithful to his promise with Jonathan, he takes care of heritange of Jonathan.
Mephibosheth was afraid and he thought he is a servant of King David, he is small as a dog before the king.
But David treated him as a son of David's own. This is the way of a man who follows the way of the Lord and gives honor to the Lord. Show kindness for God's love.
How?
Show kindness of God to needed man for we are God's people.

The Lord gave David victory wherever he went
2 Samuel 8:1-18
The Lord gave David victory wherever he went.
King David dedicated these articles to the Lord, as he had done with the silver and gold from all the nations he had subdued: Edom and Moab, the Ammonites and the Philistines, and Amalek. He also dedicated the plunder taken from Hadadezer son of Rehob, king of Zobah.
David reigned over all Israel, doing what was just and right for all his people. Joab son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; Zadok son of Ahitub and Ahimelek son of Abiathar were priests; Seraiah was secretary; Benaiah son of Jehoiada was over the Kerethites and Pelethites, and David’s sons were priests(royal advisers).
David's sons were priests: Although not from a priestly family, David was himself something of a priest-king, like Melchizedek, a much earlier king of Jerusalem.
Why?
The Lord blesses David and gave him victory wherever he went. So all enemies were subdued to David and sent tributes to David.
David got the victory and got a lot of plunder of gold and silver, but he dedicated these articles to the Lord, for David knew it is the power of the Lord made his victory.
David was doing what was just and right for all his people. this is a nice leader before the Lord. Not pursue our own profit but the other's profit and righteousness.
David makes his government management to each job position with the right man.

The Lord gave David victory wherever he went。God likes us getting better, but God did not caring what we do for the Lord, actually we can not do anything for the Lord. It is the Lord did it. Without we can do nothing.

Who am I, Sovereign Lord
2 Samuel 7:18-29
Why?
God said he will build the house of David, so David came to the Lord and prayed to the Lord.
David humbled himself and gave honor to the Lord. Who am I? All of us should say the same word, Who am I?
There is no one like our God. Our God is trustworthy, and he has promised us good things to us.
=================================================================
1)Humble ourselves, 2)Focus not on now but on the future generation, 3)Remember what God has done on me, leading and give praise to the Lord. 4)Pray base on God's way and God's plan, instead of my own plan and desire, then it will be satified by the Lord.
===============================================
How?
Humble myself and honor the name of the Lord, let me be built by the Lord, transform my life more like Him.
Then King David went in and sat before the Lord, and he said: “Who am I, Sovereign Lord, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?
How great you are, Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears. And who is like your people Israel—the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt?
Lord Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying, ‘I will build a house for you.’ So your servant has found courage to pray this prayer to you. Sovereign Lord, you are God! Your covenant is trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant.
On this promise rests a hope which runs right through the remainder of the Old Testament, the hipe of a Messiah. And when Christ came, the promise was fulfilled. He was born in David's birthplace, Bethlehem, and of the house and lineage of David. The angel tells Mary: "The Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever and of his kingdom there will be no end. Why?
God said he will build the house of David, so David came to the Lord and prayed to the Lord.
David humbled himself and gave honor to the Lord. Who am I? All of us should say the same word, Who am I?
There is no one like our God. Our God is trustworthy, and he has promised us good things to us.

I took you from the pasture, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel.
2 Samuel 7:1-17
After the king was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, he said to Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.”
But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan, saying: I took you from the pasture, from tending the flock, and appointed you ruler over my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men on earth. And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people will not oppress them anymore, as they did at the beginning.
‘The Lord declares to you that the Lord himself will establish a house for you: When your days are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, your own flesh and blood, and I will establish his kingdom. He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be his father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands. But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever.’”
God will not allow David to fulfill his dream of building the Temple - that is for his son, a man of peace, not a warrior. But the disappointment is followed by a promise that goes way beyond anything David could have asked: no wonder his response is a great outpouring of love and praise. He may not build a house for God, but God will build him a house - a dynasty - which will be 'forever'.
Why?
God was blessed by the Lord and all enemies were not come to bother him, so David thought about the Lord, his living place is a tent. This is the love and caring to the Lord.
But David is a warrior, God did not allow David to build a Temple for Him.
But God promised David to build a dynasty for him and which will be forever. And God will punish them as His son.
It is the Lord's grace raised David from shepherd to a king, be a leader of a nation.
It is the Lord's grace raised me from a little man to be a manager of a company.

I will be humiliated in my own eyes
2 Samuel 6:1-23
He and all his men went to Baalah in Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name, the name of the Lord Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim on the ark. David and all Israel were celebrating with all their might before the Lord, with castanets, harps, lyres, timbrels, sistrums and cymbals. The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; David was afraid of the Lord that day and said, “How can the ark of the Lord ever come to me?”
The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the Lord blessed him and his entire household. Now King David was told, “The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God.” So David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing.
Michal daughter of Saul watched from a window. And when she saw King David leaping and dancing before the Lord, she despised him in her heart.
David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me rather than your father or anyone from his house when he appointed me ruler over the Lord’s people Israel—I will celebrate before the Lord. I will become even more undignified than this, and I will be humiliated in my own eyes. But by these slave girls you spoke of, I will be held in honor.”
Why?
God is good and God is awesome. God is full of mercy and righteousness.
Come to the Lord with rejoicing for God is worthy to be worshipped.
Michal looks king should be a ruler with authority and gentle altitude, but David knew before the Lord he is a man. It is the grace come upon him.
David heard that God blesses the house of Obed-Edom, so he like to invited Ark of the Lord to city of David.

Be quiet and Inquired of the Lord,
2 Samuel 5:17-25
When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went down to the stronghold.
David inquired of the Lord, “Shall I go and attack the Philistines? Will you deliver them into my hands?”
So David went to Baal Perazim, and there he defeated them. He said, “As waters break out, the Lord has broken out against my enemies before me.”
Once more the Philistines came up and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim; so David inquired of the Lord, and he answered, “Do not go straight up, but circle around behind them and attack them in front of the poplar trees.
As soon as you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the poplar trees, move quickly, because that will mean the Lord has gone out in front of you to strike the Philistine army.” So David did as the Lord commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Gibeon[ to Gezer.
Why?
When Philistine knew David has been a king over Israel, they went up and tried to defeat David, that they may do the same thing as Saul's period.
David is not Saul, David will inquire the Lord, and twice David did.
God always doing the new things, twice answers to David are not the same way to defeat Philistines.
Did as the Lord commanded is the best way to defeat an enemy. Actually, it is the Lord has gone out in front of David.
2. Pray to the Lord.

華人 : scale up,create/following rules遵守規則。

You will shepherd my people Israel
2 Samuel 5:1-16
All the elder of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a compact with them at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel.
We are your own flesh and blood. You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.
The Jebusites said to David, “You will not get in here; even the blind and the lame can ward you off.” They thought, “David cannot get in here.” Nevertheless, David captured the fortress of Zion, the City of David.
David then took up residence in the fortress and called it the City of David, He built up the area around it, from the supporting terraces inward. Because the Lord Almighty was with him
And David knew that the Lord had established him as king over Israel and had exalted his kingdom for the sake of his people Israel.
The writer makes it clear that David is no usurper, God has given him his title to the throne; a fact recognized by Saul, by Abner and finally by the whole nation.
Although part of Jerusalem fell to Judah at the conquest, the fortress itself had never been taken. The Jebusites had some ground for their boast that a garrison of blind men and cripples could hold it. But they underestimated David.
Jerusalem was the first-rate choice of capital. It was centrally situated, tribally neutral, had a distinguished pre-history from Abraham's time and could, therefore, provide the 12 tribes with a unifying center. It was held by Judah until Nebuchadnezzar destroyed it 400 years later.
Why?
God helped David to be king over Israel, not only his people in Israel, but the king of Hiram sent a message to him.
Jebusites were boasted garrison and their ground of the city, for God’s help David gets the city of David.
David did not pursue to be a king of Israel, but people come to David and hope he be king of Israel
People look Christians are weak, but our weak is our way to be strong, and let the Lord support us. This is a different concept with common people.
Why move the capital to Jerusalem? For Jerusalem was occupied by Jebusites for a long time. If David chose Hebron as the capital of Israel, which will be though as king of Judah. If capital is Jerusalem where is not belong to any tribe, this new nation beyond each tribe.
Now Hiram king of Tyre sent envoys to David, for Hiram is a famous and big country in that period. Hiram came and sent gifts, so David knew God had established him as king over Isreal.
David has another 11 sons, plus last 6 sons and daughters, so David's family has numerous member. So the Lord blesses church not only for someone but for God's family. We should beyond our branches or groups in churches, but be a united church of the Lord. And let the Christian become much more.
How?
Let me be more like a shepherd of my stuff and my brothers and sisters in my church.

Ish-Bosheth was murdered by his men
1 Samuel 4:1-12
Now Saul’s son had two men who were leaders of raiding bands. One was named Baanah and the other Rekab; they were sons of Rimmon the Beerothite from the tribe of Benjamin.
set out for the house of Ish-Bosheth, and they arrived there in the heat of the day while he was taking his noonday rest. They killed Ish-Bosheth
David answered Rekab and his brother Baanah, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, “As surely as the Lord lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble, when someone told me, ‘Saul is dead,’ and thought he was bringing good news, I seized him and put him to death in Ziklag. That was the reward I gave him for his news! How much more—when wicked men have killed an innocent man in his own house and on his own bed—should I not now demand his blood from your hand and rid the earth of you!
Once again David's supports completely fail to understand his attitude to Saul honorable burial, the two murderers are publicly disgraced.
Why?
People always think of their own benefit and are doing terrible things. Their hearts do not have righteousness and mercy. They murdered their king and tried to get a reward from David, but they were wrong, David is a righteousness man.
Even though all these things are helping David to be king of Israel.
Man's heart is quirkiness and blackmail.

Abner makes terms: Jaob's revenge
2 Samuel 3:22-39
Joab then left David and sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the cistern at Sirah. But David did not know it. Now when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him in the stomach, and he died.
When David heard about this, he said, “I and my kingdom are forever innocent before the Lord concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner.
David took an oath, "May God deal with me, be it ever so severely if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets."
All the people took note and were pleased; indeed, everything the king did please them. So on that day all the people there and all Israel knew that the king had no part in the murder of Abner son of Ner.
And today, though I am the anointed king, I am weak, and these sons of Zeruiah are too strong for me. May the Lord repay the evildoer according to his evil deeds!”
Abner transfers his support to David, he carries the nation with him. But he reckons without the implacable hatred of Joab, David leads the nation's mourning for Abner. Despite a public declaration of innocence, the taint of the murder remains with him all his life. Abner's death is to David's advantage, just as the death of Ishbosheth will be: both weaken the support for Saul's family.
Why?
Joab killed Abner privately, back of David so David keeps in mind and said I am weak. Joab did not respect king David.
Joab killed Abner for his own benefit, one for revenge and another afraid Abner may replace his position.
Important person dead is good to David build his kingdom, David did not kill them at all. But people would come to join David.
David makes clear that he is innocent before the Lord concerning the blood of Abner.

I will help you bring all Israel over to you.
2 Samuel 3:2-21
Six Sons were born to David in Hebron.
Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to say to David, “Whose land is it? Make an agreement with me, and I will help you bring all Israel over to you.”
“Good,” said David. “I will make an agreement with you. But I demand one thing of you: Do not come into my presence unless you bring Michal daughter of Saul when you come to see me.”
Abner conferred with the elders of Israel and said, “For some time you have wanted to make David your king.
Abner also spoke to the Benjamites in person. Then he went to Hebron to tell David everything that Israel and the whole tribe of Benjamin wanted to do.
Ishbosheth is not the man his father was. Abner is real power. If he transfers his support to David, he carries the nation with him.
Why?
Because Abner slept with Saul's a concubine named Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, so Abner wanted to help David build kingdom which is God promised to David.
Abner wanted to get more profit from David for he may help David, he has the real power of Israel.
Ishbosheth has not any choice for he is not Saul.
David was living peace in Hebron, so he has six sons.
David loved Michal, his wife. So he asked Abner bring Michal back to him

Must the sword devour forever?
2 Samuel 2:12-3:1
Then Abner said to Joab, “Let’s have some of the young men get up and fight hand to hand in front of us.” “All right, let them do it,” Joab said.
Abner called out to Joab, “Must the sword devour forever? Don’t you realize that this will end in bitterness? How long before you order your men to stop pursuing their fellow Israelites?”
The war between the house of Saul and the house of David lasted a long time. David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker.
An attempt to settle the issue by representative single combat at Gibeon is inconclusive, and full-scale civil war follows.
Why?
A word may cause civil war among two groups of people.
All of them agreed to fight hand to hand. But when someone is dead, there is no end of the fight.
David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker, for God is with David.
Must the sword devour forever? Yes, it could not devour forever, it will end in bitterness. War is terrible, the end of war is bitterness.
This war started from the commander of two groups, and not among two kings.

Two years the nation is divided
2 Samuel 2:1-11
David inquired of the Lord, "Shall I go up to one of the towns of Judah?" The Lord said, "Go up"
David asked, "Where shall I go?" "To Hevron."
The men of Judah came to Hebron and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah.
Meanwhile, Abner son of Ner, he makes Ish-Bosheth son of Saul as king over Israel, and he reigned two years.
Now be strong and brave. May the Lord show you kindness and faithfulness, and I will show you the same favor because you have done this, David told men of Jabesh Gilead.
Only Judah acclaims David as king. The other ten tribes follow the lead of Abner, Saul's army commander, and give allegiance to Ishbosheth, Saul's son. For two years the nation is divided.
Why?
Most people of Israel did not accept David as their king, so under the Abner assistance, Ish-Bosheth son of Saul be a king over Israel.
David knew his way is under the Lord, so he inquired the Lord shall I move and where shall I go.
David went to Judah, so Judah could be David's home town and existing longer time. God's blessing is with them.
David blesses the men of Jabesh Gilead, for David appreciated their brave and their love for Saul.
One has his evil part but we should accept his merit and credit he has done. No one is perfect.

David took up this lament concerning Saul and his son Jonathan
2 Samuel 1:17-27
David took up this lament concerning Saul and his son Jonathan and ordered that the men of Judah be taught this lament of the bow.
Saul and Jonathan— in life they were loved and admired, and in death, they were not parted. They were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions.
David took Saul and Jonathan as a mighty one,
How the mighty have fallen in battle!
I grieve for you, Jonathan my brother. Your love for me was wonderful, more wonderful than that of women.
The lament for Saul and Jonathan is one of the most moving and beautiful of all David's poems. His regret for the king seems wholly sincere; his distress at the loss of Jonathan, deep and genuine.
Why?
David loves Jonathan than any others, David took Saul as king and mighty one.
David wrote this lament to let people know that he is real sorrow to there dead in the battle for Israel.
David my won other people's heart for the honors of King Saul.
David shows the real sorrow to Saul and Jonathan's fallen. David knew the heart of the Lord and David can make the whole Israelite become one nation.
David was really sad for Saul's death, for there are twice David did not kill Saul. It was a threatening situation.
