2 Samuel 3:22-39
Joab then left David and sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the cistern at Sirah. But David did not know it. Now when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him in the stomach, and he died.
When David heard about this, he said, “I and my kingdom are forever innocent before the Lord concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner.
David took an oath, "May God deal with me, be it ever so severely if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets."
All the people took note and were pleased; indeed, everything the king did please them. So on that day all the people there and all Israel knew that the king had no part in the murder of Abner son of Ner.
And today, though I am the anointed king, I am weak, and these sons of Zeruiah are too strong for me. May the Lord repay the evildoer according to his evil deeds!”
Abner transfers his support to David, he carries the nation with him. But he reckons without the implacable hatred of Joab, David leads the nation's mourning for Abner. Despite a public declaration of innocence, the taint of the murder remains with him all his life. Abner's death is to David's advantage, just as the death of Ishbosheth will be: both weaken the support for Saul's family.
Why?
Joab killed Abner privately, back of David so David keeps in mind and said I am weak. Joab did not respect king David.
Joab killed Abner for his own benefit, one for revenge and another afraid Abner may replace his position.
Important person dead is good to David build his kingdom, David did not kill them at all. But people would come to join David.
David makes clear that he is innocent before the Lord concerning the blood of Abner.
How?
Make me clear before the Lord in my daily life. May God's way be my way and pray to the Lord always.
