All service in God's home is a high honour

1 Chronicles 26:1-31
The Gatekeepers lists capable men, Meshelmiah: 7 sons and relatives, 18 in all. Obed-Edom had 8 sons and descendants , 62 in all. Hosah had 4 sons and relatives were 13 in all. Total were 93 in all.
Six Levites a day on the east, four a day on the north, four a day on the south and two at a a time at the strorehouse, four at the road and two at the court. 14 men a day and 8 men a time at other places.
A number of Levites were to act as doorkeepers, taking turns on guard outside the Temple and storehouse. Presumably they were there to keep order. They also received gifts.
Tresures, clerks and magistrates are appointed to look after the Temple finances and legal affairs and to keep the records.
Why?
All service in God's Temple was a high honour - including that of these 'gate-keepers'
The Temple treasuries - gifts and taxes from the people, and the spoils of war were vast.
Samuel, Saul, Abner and Job predate the Temple, so presumably these gifts were for the earlier Tent.
How?
All service in God's home is a high honour.

Leaders in inspired prophecy

1 Chronicles 25:1-31
The ministry of prophecying, accompanied by harps, lyres and cymbals.
Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun who prophesied under the king's supervision.
All these men were under the supervision of their fathers for the music of the temple of the Lord, with instruments.
Along with their relatives - all of them trained and skilled in music for the Lord - they were numbered 288. Young and old alike, teacher as well as student, cast lots for their duties.
There were 24 worship groups, each group has 12 members.
Why?
Music, both instrumental and vocal, was important in Jewish worship, as it was in social life generally. The Temple musicians were 'leaders in inspired prophecy', proclaiming God's message.
Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun were amongst the famous: they are named in the Psalms. But status does not come into the Temple service. Teacher and pupil alike share an equal place.
David, himself a skilled musician, must have taken special delight in this part of the arrangements, which he supervised personally.
To be a worship member is an important ministry before the Lord, it works as leaders in inspired prophecy.
Casts for their duties with the same position in worship God.
Those who are trained and skilled in music for the Lord. So we have to prepared ourseves to serve the Lord in worship music.
How?
It is a honor and holy service in church to lead congregation worshipping the Lord.

All servants of the Lord are same

1 Chronicles 24:20-31
Theses were the Levites, according to their families. They also cast lots, just as their brothers the descendants of Aaron did, in the presence of King David and of Zadok, Ahimelech, and the heads of families of the priests and of the Levites.
The families of the oldest brother were treated the same as those of the youngest.
Why?
Serve the Lord in the same position, same way and same treatment. No matter what is the families and age.
How?
Christians are the same before the Lord, serve the Lord is with the heart, no relate to any physical condition.

Ministering order of descendant of Aaron

1 Chronicles 24:1-19
The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. But Nadab and Abihu died before their father did, and they had no sons; so Eleazar and Ithamar served as the priests.
With the help of Zadok a descendant of Eleazar and Ahimelech a descendant of Ithamar, David separated them into divisions for their appointed order of ministering. A large number of leaders were found among Eleazar's descendants than among Ithamar's.
There were 24 appointed order of ministering when they entered the temple of the Lord.
Twenty-four groups of priests all tracing their family lines back to Moses' brother Aaron, the first high priest - were to be in charge of the Temple sacrifices, each serving for two weeks a year, The order was decided by lot.
Why?
The fact that Eli's family was descended from Ithamar partly accounts for the reduced numbers. Because of the sins of Eli's sons, many of their descendants met a violent death.
Decided by lot an acceptable method to make decision.
How?
Serve the Lord has the regulation and separated schedule, share these serves with other groups. Let the service has good quality and won't be a heavy burden.

Serve the Lord from 20 years old

1 Chronicles 23:14-32
Moses is son of Amram, Amram is son of Kohath.
The descendants of Levi, the workers twenty years old or more who served in the temple of the Lord.
The Levites no longer need to carry the tabernacle or any of the articles used in its service. According to the last instructions of David. The duty of the Levites was to help Aaron's descendants in their service of the temples, the side rooms, the purification of all sacred things and the performance of other duties at the house of God. And so the Levites carried out their responsibilities for the Tent of Meeting, for the Holy Place and under their brothers the descendants of Aaron, for the service of the temple of the Lord.
From the earliest days of desert-wandering, the job of the Levites had been the care and transport of the Tabernacle. They had also served the priests - in later times at the many shrines scattered throughout the land. Now the Ark was to have a permanent home, and worship was to be centralized in the Temple at Jerusalem. So David allocates new duties to the Levites: the care-taking and maintenance of the Temple; appointments as magistrates, janitors, musicians and choristers; and general assistance of the priests.
Thirty was the age at which a Levite began his work, David changed this to 20, once the Temple was completed.
Why?
David was walking with the Lord and be loved on in present of the Lord, so he set last service instruction of Levites.
How?
Serve the Lord may more younger from 20 years old.

Serve the Lord in any position and honor His Holy name

1 Chronicle 23:1-13
David gathered together all the leaders of Israel, as well as the priests and Levites. The Levites thirty years old or more were counted, and the total number of men was thirty-eight thousand.
24000(63%) be the supervise the work of the temple of the Lord.
 6000(16%) be officials and judges.
 4000(10.5%) be gatekeepers
4000(10.5%) of it are to praise the Lord with the musical instruments.
The Chronicler makes no mention of the struggle over the succession recorded in 1 King 1. The focus right through these chapters is the Temple and the worship of God.
The next five chapter record David's organization of the nation's religious and civil administration.
V6-24 provides check-list of these who belong to the tribe of Levi and are therefore qualified to enter God's service.
Why?
Serve the Lord at Temple is main mission of Levi, David divided them as four groups, mainly to the work of the temple of the Lord, next is the official and judges, others are security and praise team.
How?
No matter what position I am doing is part of roles in God's house. The most important is how to honor the Lord.

Discretion and understanding

1 Chronicle 22:1-18
May the Lord give you discretion and understanding when he puts you in command over Israel,so that you may keep the law of the Lord your God.
If you are careful to observe the decrees and laws that the Lord gave Moses for Israel. Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged. David said to Solomon.
David said to all the leaders of Israel to help his son Solomon" God has handed you rest on every side. For he has handed the inhabitants of the land over to me, and the land is subject to the Lord and to his people. Now devote your heart and soul to seeking the Lord your God. Begin to build the sanctuary of the Lord God.
It probably belongs to the time of Solomon's co-regency with his father, which may have lasted some years, David never stopped longing to build God a house fit for him.
He accepted the set-back of God's refusal and turned all his energy and enthusiasm to the things he could do: deciding the plan; amassing materials; deciding the plan.
Why?
You have shed much blood: This does not imply that Solomon was morally better than David, or that David's wars were not justified. These very wars bought Solomon's reign of peace in a strong kingdom, and with it the freedom for king and nation to concentrate at last on the great task of building God's temple.
David reminded his son Solomon many times to observe the decrees and laws of God, but alas he turned to the gods in last of his life.
David really understood his kingdom is come from the gift of the Lord, it is the blessing of the Lord, so he devoted his all to prepare any materials to build the house to the Lord.
How?
Thank the Lord's mercy and love, with the Lord I can do nothing.  May I have discretion and understanding to keep the keep the laws of the Lord, my God.

The whole nation guilty

1 Chronicle 21:18-31
The angel of the Lord ordered Gad to tell David to go up and build an altar to the Lord on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
Araunah saw the angel; his four sons who were with him hid themselves.
David approached, then when Araunah looked and saw him, he left the threshing floor and bowed down before David with his face to the ground.
David insisted on paying the full price.  David won't take for the Lord what is Araunah's, or sacrifice a burnt offering that costs him nothing. David said, "The house of the Lord God is to be here, and also the altar of burnt offering for Israel." So David paid Araunah six hundred shekels(7 kg/15 pounds) of gold for the site.
The threshing-floor was a flat open space where the sheaves could be spread out. Oxen pulling studded sleds loosened the grain, which was them winnowed簸揚 by tossing it into the wind. Ornan=Araunah in Samuel. Difficulty may have arisen because it was a foreign name.
Why?
The whole nation guilty: National solidarity is a fact. When the king as leader sins the people suffer. The same is true of leaders and nations today.
Hid: Perhaps in the cave beneath the rocky floor, which now lies under the Dome of the Rock mosque清真寺, erected豎立 on the Temple site.
2 Samuel records the price paid for the threshing-floor, this verse apparently the price paid for the whole site.
People saw the Lord or his angel is terrified and hide themselves. When saw the king they afraid his authority and come out to bow down before the king.
How?
To be a leader have to very careful to his mind and behavior, so as a Christian is ambassador of the Christ.

Trust in the Lord almighty

1 Chronicle 21:1-17
Satan rose up against Israel and incited David to take a census of Israel.
In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand men who could handled  sword, including four hundred and seventy thousand in Judah.
But Joab did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, because the king's command was repulsive to him.
This command was also evil in the sight of God; so he punished Israel.
David chose the one : let him fall into the hands of the Lord, for his mercy is very great; but do not let him fall into the hands of men.
Why?
For the Chronicler the census and plague are significant simply as the lead-in to David's decision to build the Temple on the site of Ornan's threshing-floor, a fact not even mentioned in Samuel.
2 Samuel has 'God', It is God who sets the limits to Satan's power. His existence in God's world, and the reason why God allow him power to act, remain a mystery.
Joab did not number Levi and Benjamin, Levi is the servant of the Temple, Banjamin is the tribe of Saul.
David chose the one fall into hands of God instead of fall into hands of men. This is right decision. For Gos is full of mercy.
How?
Something we don't understand the plan of God, but trust in God for he always loves us and his mind is always beyond us.

Victories of David

1 Chronicle 20:1-8
David captured Rabbah, Ammonites.
These were descended from the giants in Gath, and they fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants.
Victories of David, for the Lord is with David and his army.

The Lord will do what is good in his sight

1 Chronicle 19:1-19
Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what is good in his sight.
David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun, son the of Nahash king of the Ammonites.
Samuel 10:18 has 700 chariots, a more likely figure. But the word chariot here can mean simply 'mountain men'. The foot-soldiers here are the 'horsemen' of Samuel, since at this time in the ancient Near East the cavalry dismounted to flight.
Why?
This war was occurred by the Ammonites and Arameans. David was passive to fight them.
Fight for the people and our God. Pray to the Lord with good altitude is please to the Lord. Trust in Him for He is the Lord Almighty!
The Lord is the sovereign God!
How?
Pray to the Lord and humble myself, the Lord will do what is good in his sight. Trust in Him.

Victory is belong to the Lord

1 Chronicle 18:1-17
The Lord gave David victory everywhere he went.
King David dedicated these articles to the Lord, as he had done with the silver and gold he had taken from these nations.
David's sons: The writer of Samuel calls them 'priest', but by the Chronicler's time the word priest had acquired technical meaning.
Why?
The Lord is the victory God, who decide which side will be victory. Our victory is depends on the Lord, instead of rely on horses and men.
For the victory is belong to the Lord so David dedicated the articles to the Lord. He humble himself, his victory is the blessing of the Lord.
How?
All I have now and what can I do is the blessing of the Lord! If there are not the blessing of the Lord on me, I am nothing!

There is no one like you, O Lord

1 Chronicle 17:17-27
There is no one like you, O Lord, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.
Do as you promised, so that it will be established and that your name will be great forever.
Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever in your sight; for you, O Lord, have blessed it, and it will be blessed forever.
Why?
When Jerusalem was taken and the people went into exile in Babylon all seemed lost; despite the promise, David's line of kings ended. The Chronicler wants to revive that hope and trust in God. For the New Testament writers, the promise was fulfilled in Jesus who came from the family of David and will reign for ever.
The Lord blessed David and his family, so as God blesses us through Jesus.
There is no one like you, O Lord, you are the living God and mighty God.
How?
O Lord, may I be continue forever in your sight!

Meditate the mind of God and do it to honor the Lord!

1 Chronicles 17:1-15
David loves God so he wanted to build a house for the Lord.
God reply to David the word of the entire revelation through prophet Nathan.
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cur off all your enemies from before you.
It seems wrong to David that he should have a palace to live in while the Ark of God is still housed in a tent.
And his attitude is right. God refuses his request, but expresses his love and approval of David in the promise of a dynasty which will ever die out, and in allowing Solomon to build the Temple.
David does not let disappointment shadow his glad acceptance of God's answer.
From God's promise to David sprang the hope of a Messiah.
Why?
The attitude of David is right, so as we should have the attitude to ponder the mind and heart of the Lord. If view from the Lord what should I do, or request to the Lord.
God will reply my request through himself or through may ways.
How?
Meditate the mind of God, do whatever may honor the name of the Lord.

Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always

1 Chronicle 16:1-43
David's Psalm of Thanks to the Lord.
Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always, remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced.
For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods.
For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens.
Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength, ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name.
These may be typical of what Asaph's choir sang before the Ark, rather than the actual words. At Jerusalem and at Gibeon provision is made for daily sacrifices and praise to God in words and music.
Why?
Proper worship is earliest times music has held a special place in worship.
No matter what happen, look to the Lord and his strength, seek his face always.
Remember the wonder he has done, so we may not fear the trouble and challenge.
All of gods of the nations are idols, but the Lord made the heavens. Our Lord is the mighty God.
How?
Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always! I know I can't, but the Lord can do it for me. Great is the Lord and most worthy of praise!

Joyful sound with musical instruments and singing of the choirs

1 Chronicle 15:16-29
David told the leaders of the Levites to appoint their fellow Levites as musicians to make a joyful sound with musical instruments: lyres, harps and cymbals
Kenaniah the head Levite was in charge of the singing; that was his responsibility because he was skillful at itKenaniah, who was in charge of the singing of the choirs.
So all Israel brought up the ark of the covenant of the Lord with shouts, with the sounding of rams’ horns and trumpets, and of cymbals, and the playing of lyres and harps.
David also wore a linen ephod.
Why?
The Lord is worthy to praise with joyful song, and Kenaniah is skillful at it.
David wear a linen ephod, for he respect the Lord with all his altitude.
How?
To be a worshipe need has the same altitude as David.

Give honor to the Lord

1 Chronicle 15:1-15
No one but the Levites may carry the ark of the Lord and to minister before him forever.
David called together the descendants of Aaron and the Levites: Kohath, Merari, Gershon, Elizaphn, Hebron, Uzziel.
The heads of the Levitical families, Zadok, Abiathar the priest, and Uriel, Asiah, Joel, Shemaiah, Eliel and Amminadab the Levites, were called to bring the ark of  the Lord on their shoulders, as Moses had commanded in accordance with the word of the Lord.
Why?
On the role of the priests and Levites, has no parallel.
After leaving it three months at Obed Edom's house, David brings the Ark to Jeruslem and installs it in the tent he has had made for God.
The original tent of God and altar remain at Gebeon.
The Chronicler details the role of the Levites in the ceremony, David and the Levites wear the special clothes required.
Levites was chosen to minister before the Lord, so the ministers and pastors are chosen one to serve the Lord. It is not everyone could be chosen for this mission.
How?
I obey the word of the Lord and his plan, do what I can do to honor his holy name, no matter in what position I am.

No one is perfect in this world

1 Chronicle 14:1-17
David has more wives and became father of more sons and daughters in Jerusalem.
David inquired of God for Philistines went up in full force to search for him.
The Philistines had abandoned their gods there, and David gave orders to burn them in the fire.
Once more the Philistine raided the valley; so David inquired of God again, and God answered him.
David was well able to handle the nations around. His family life was his weak point, as the other records make plain.
Why?
David was interesting in women but had no time to take care his many children, so his family became his weak point. He is not a good father and husband, although he is a good king in his nation.
David is a good follower of the Lord. He inquire everything important thing to the Lord. David fear the Lord so the Lord is with him.
No one is prefect in the world, except God and Jesus Christ.
How?
Don't criticize others for I am a sinner either. I am not prefect, but rely on the Lord I could be rescued.

Decision maker rule

1 Chronicle 13:1-14
If it seems good to you and if it is the will of the Lord our God.
Touched the Ark will be struck down, but the Ark in the house of Obed-Edom, his whole family were be blessed from the Lord.
Moving the Ark: an awful warning
In line with his purpose of outlining the religious assigns this event first place in the record of David's reign. In actual point of time it came somewhat later
Why?
This is not an angry God but the awesome holiness of everything connected with him. No unauthorized person may so much as touch the sacred Ark.
Do make every decision may refer to 1) if it seems good to you 2) it it is the will of the Lord our God.
How?
God is Holy so everything relate to the Lord is Holy. Let us be an Holy Christian. Make decision according to it is good to person and it is the will of out Lord!

Worriors join David

1 Chronicles 12:1-40
David's special guard defected to him at his strong hold in the desert.
David's supporters a Ziklag, the city the Philistines allowed him a base.
This chapter is not paralleled elsewhere.
The Chronicler is stressing the whole nation's support for David, so he tells how Saul's own kinsmen went over to him, and describes the warriors from Gad as so eager to join him that they crossed the River Jordan when it was in spate.
How?
Warriors and people's hearts are closing to the one who flight for them. David grant people's heart. So he may be a king of Israel.

Mighty men should be memorized in the history!

1 Chronicles 11:10-47
The list of David's mighty men:
The great are three mighty men: Jashobeam, Eleazar, Abishai, they broke through the philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David.
Uriah the Hittite, Zabad son of Ahlai is written in the list of  mighty men of David.
Bethlehem was David's home town. It is about 8km/5 miles south of Jerusalem.
Why?
For those mighty men devoted their life, so the kingdom of David could be helped. They were honest to David's reign.
Uriah is great men also for he flight for David's kingdom, even he was killed by David's trick.
Mighty men to the country should be memorized in the history!
How?
God stirred many people to help his anointed one, David.

God was with king David

1 Chronicle 11:1-9
David made a compact with all the elders of Israel at Hebron before the Lord, and they anointed David king over Israel, as the Lord had promise through Samuel.
David capture the fortress of Zion, the City of David.
David became more and more powerful, because the Lord Almighty was with him.
The story of David's reign occupies the rest of 1 Chronicles. It is  selective history compared with 2 Samuel, missing out David's adultery with Bathsheba, the rape of Tamar and the family dissension which culminated in Absalon's rebellion. But if the Chronicler omits, he also adds to what we know, particularly the detailed plans and preparations for building the Temple.
Why?
God's word never missed, God's word is faithful forever.
David became king nd his kingdom became more and more powerful, because the Lord was with him. So the blessing of the Lord is most important to anyone.
How?
Walk on the way of the Lord, then God will be with us. So the blessing will be with us.

Be faithful to the Lord, for God loves us

1 Chronicles 10:1-14
Saul takes his life, he and his three sons died, and all his house died together.
When all the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead heard of everything the Philistines had done to Saul, all their valiant men went and took the bodies of Saul and his sons and bought them to Jabesh. They buried their bone under the great tree in Jabesh and they fasted seven days.
Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord.
Why?
For the Chronicler, the history of the monarchy begins with David. Here are sufficient comment on Israel’s first king.
The people of Jabesh owed a debt to Saul: see 1 Samuel 11, Saul’s timely help won lasting gratitude. Saul first victory of war.
Men of Jabesh remember the help of Saul to them.

If something happened, it was almighty God who made it happen.
How?
Remember what God had done for me. Be faithful to the Lord!

God's people reunite to one

1 Chronicles 9:1-44
The first to resettle on their own property in their own towns were some Israelites, priests, Levites and temple servants.
The people from Judah numbered 690.
The people from Banjamin numbered 956
The priests, who were heads of families, numbered 1760. They were able men, responsible for ministering in the house of God.
Of the Levites: gatekeepers: numbered 212, some of them charge of the articles used in the temple service; some were musicians; some were responsible for the work day and night.
This section, relating to the 6th centry BC, interrupts the narrative of Saul and David, just beginning.
The Chronicler wants to emphasize continuity: this is the exiles' own history: they belong to and have a part in the story.
He focuses on the resettlement of Jerusalem, listing the people by tribe and family; the priests; the Levites; gatekeepers; those in charge of utensils and stores and musicians.
Banjamin and Judah and Ephraim and Manasseh(two most powerful of the ten breakaway(分離) northern, representing the rest), they are one people again.
Saul's family line, repeated from chapter 8, serves to introduce the particular story beginning in the next chapter.
Why?
Priests came back to Jerusalem more than other tribes for the purpose of resettle is to restore the worship the God at God's temple.
How?
God's people after exile are reunite to one again!

Only daughters

1 Chronicle 7,8
The descendants of Manasseh: another descendants was named Zelophehad, who had only daughters.
Chapter 8 describes the genealogy of Saul the Benjamite.
Issachar; Benjamin, (This does not tie in with chapter 8 and it has been suggested that verse 6-11 refer to Zebulun, otherwise omitted altogether, and that verse 12 is the end of a lost list of Dan). Naphtali; the half tribe of Manasseh; Ephraim; Asher.
The families of Benjamin; the family line of Saul, Israel's first king.
when the ten northern tribes broke way to form the kingdom of Israel, Benjamin became part of the southern kingdom, joining Judah,
Why?
Zelophehad who had only daughters, my situation is like him. Even the daughters have the same right to inherit the right of tribe and family.
Genealogy:  let us remember where we came from, and what we inherited. Culture should not be our limit but keep the merit of my culture.
How?
My inheritance is the arrangement of the Lord for me, I am glad that I have two daughters. They are the gift of the Lord to me.

Royal priesthood

Chronicles 6:1-81
The sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath nd Merari.
The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. The children of Amram: Aaron, Moses and Miriam.
Samuel is the descendant of Kohath.
The priestly tribe of Levi. The line of the high priests; the families of Gersons, Kohath and Merari; families of the singers; descendants of Aaron; list of Levitical cities.
Notice the space given to the priestly tribe, in which the Chronicler has a special interest.
V27: 'Samuel his son' should be inserted after Elkath. The reference is to the prophet Samuel. Hebrew does not have 'and Samuel his son.'
Why?
Priests have an important role in the plan of the Lord. They are the interpreter of God's word on the earth.
Entering New Testament, Christian has the role of priest of God in this world also.
you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.(1 Peter 2:9)
How?
Play the royal priesthood in my life and honor the name of Jesus Christ!

Victory and safety are in the hands of the Lord

Chronicles 4, 5
Descendants of Judah, Jabez, prayed to the God for his pain and suffering.
Descendants of Simeon defeated the remnant of the Amalekites who had escaped.
Descendants of Reuben, they waged war against the Hagrites, who fell into their hand. And they loves in their tents throughout all the region east of Gilead.
Descendants of Gad, they lived in Gilead, in Nashan and in its towns and in all the pastureland of Sharon to their limit.
The Reubenites, and Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh waged war against the Hagrites, Jetur, Naphish and Nodab, because the war was of God.
The members of the half-tribes of Manasseh live in the land, they were mighty warriors.
But they broke faith with the God of their fathers and whored after the gods of the peoples of the land, so the God of Israel stirred up the spirit of Pul king of Assyria, he took them into exile, namely, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
The two and a half tribes that settled east of the River Jorden- Ruben; Gad; the half-tribe of Manasseh.
Why?
Victory in the war is the blessing of the Lord, when these two and a half tribes broke faith with the God of their fathers, the suffering and destroy came upon them, no matter how they strong or many warriors.
How?
Victory and safety are in the hands of the Lord!

Descendants of Israel and Jesus Christ

Chronicles 1:34-54
Abraham was the father of Isaac. The sons of Isaac: Esau and Israel.
Abraham, Isaac, Israel; descendants of Ishmael and Esau narrow down to the father of the nation.
Why?
The writer he writes with the writers of Samuel and Kings the conviction that the key to the nation's peace and prosperity lies in obedience to God. To disobey is to court disaster. But he also has themes of his own, particularly:
  • true worship (focused on the Temple)
  • and true kingship (the family-line of David)
The two come together in his account of David and Solomon, where he concentrates far more on the Temple than on other aspects of their reigns.
How?
We are the descendants of Jesus Christ in spirit.

Historical records from Adam to Abraham; 1 Chronicles

1 Chronicles 1:1-33
Historical records from Adam to Abraham.
The sons of Noah, Shem, Ham and Japheth.
The sons of Shem: Elam, Asshr, Arphaxad, Lud and Aram.
Arphaxad- shelah - Eber - Peleg - Reu - Serug - Nahor - Terah - Abram (that is, Abraham)
The sons of Abraham: Isaac and Ishmael.
Why?
Although clearly concerned with the past, the Chronicler cares less about what happened than about the meaning of events. He is an interpreter of history.
For most of Chronicles the writer draws on Samuel and Kings. He expects his readers to know this history which he abbreviates, expands and modifies in keeping with his overall purpose. He ranges widely across other Old Testament books. He names as his sources various court records mentioned in Samuel and Kings.
The Chronicler chose his themes to get a particular message across to his original readers. These were the people who had returned from exile to rebuild Jerusalem under Ezra and Nehemiah. The new community had no king: the priests were their leaders:

  • They needed to be linked with the past
  • They needed reassurance that God was still with them working out his purposes
  • They needed to know how best to reestablish worship
  • They needed to be reminded that their future well being depended on their faithfulness to God.

Today's reader has some problems with Chronicles. One is the Chronicler's tendency to 'modernize' - describing events in terms the people of his own day would understand. As in other Old Testament books figures quoted often seem much too high. Chronicles frequently gives a higher figure than the comparable one in Samuel or Kings. The reason for this is not known. Maybe the intention is to stress the greatness of a victory God has given them.
